Yes
I have the chance of the above lens at what seems to me a good price.

I have been told it's the '1st version'

What does the 1 touch bit mean??!

Good match with my D200?

I'm very tempted by this lens, after selling my older Sigma 18-200 and putting that money in it will only cost me around £150 :)

Does anyone here have experience of it? I have been on fredmiranda to read reviews and it gets very good write ups but there seem to be several versions.....

it will be the old push pull version. to zoom you push or pull depending on which way you want to go

i had one briefly and it was sharp and fast for what it was. nice lens but didnt suit me entirely

1 touch means it is the old one ring, push-pull to focus model. I believe they are a wee bit slower than the newer two ring version, but optically should be pretty similar. It will be a very old lens though.....

I believe the 1 touch is the early incarnation with a push-pull zoom mechanishm. They go for around £250-280 from what I have seen. I, personally, would try and go for the 2 ring version which will set you back around £350-380 2nd hand if you can stretch that far.

OK thanks guys (assuming you are all guys!!), push and pull zoom sounds weird, do you push and pull the actual barrell?

Thanks Flash, very useful info, just put off by this a little;

"This was Nikon's first professional telephoto zoom of 1988. It is built like a tank, has superlative optics and even today is an excellent top-drawer professional lens. Be careful though, zooms can wear with age (or being dropped) and I've almost bought used ones that weren't sharp. If you have a good one, it is extraordinary."

I'll make some enquiries about returning etc as i want a sharp lens if i buy!!

I have the siggy 70-210 apo which is push/pull optically they are as good but older and heavier if its a good price then buy if its not much cheaper than a newer version dont buy it

also the 1 touch has no tripod collar, so can put strain on the non proffessional bodies...I read somewhere.

I heard that if you hold your camera with the lens pointing down the zoom moves it's self:shake:

You do and (to my mind at least) it's great. The very popular Canon 100-400L works similarly.

The big advantage is that your left hand is always in the correct position supporting the lens. You don't have to fiddle about to zoom. You can zoom and shoot very quickly, far more so than with a "conventional" two-touch zoom. And with a (very little) bit of practice it becomes completely intuitive. No thought necessary. Reach towards the subject to zoom in. Pull back away from the object to zoom out. Easy.

How does the push pull work while in AF mode? I assume the ring itself is disabled for MF? Always been curious about that.
The Canon 100-400L has full-time manual focus whilst in AF mode. So when you zoom it's possible that you might slightly alter the focus if you twist the ring as you push/pull it; but you're going to refocus after you've finished zooming anyway so it's no big deal.

I don't know how the Nikon 80-200 works, but I suspect it doesn't have full-time manual focus. So the focus ring won't rotate when you're in AF mode.
