Hi ,im going to buy a new lens soon for my d5100 and want something with a half decent zoom on it .Im looking at buying the 70-300 nikkor but are there other lenses to consider with in this price range ? I no there is the tamron but ive seen mixed reviews/comparisons to the nikon .
I did buy a nikon 70-300 off ebay the other the week but it was not as described and i had a mare sorting it out with seller/ebay .It was hard to gauge the quality as it had issues .This experience has put me off buying second hand .
 
I have one that I use with my d3100 and I love it. Brilliant and very sharp so I'd have no hesitation recommending one

Don't be out off by buying second hand based on one bad experience.
There is a 70-300mm VR for sale on here ;)

The lens is sharp between 70-230mm approx and slightly softer the rest of the range.
Think f8 is the sweet spot.

Tamron 70-300mm vc version is fantastic!..I tried both out in store and left the nikon and took the tamron.;)
 
I use one and don't find it soft at all , rather than buy from eBay ,you would be better off buying from MPB who advertise on here.
 
I used to have the 70-300mm vr. In my opinion, it's up there with the 18-70mm. Excellent lenses for the money.
I had a pair of cracking lenses there. I would recommend both.

I might try my luck again on the bay ,at least im covered by paypal .Just hope i don't get accused of swapping /damaging like i did last time .

Was always really pleased with the 70-300vr I used to own. I have not used the Tamron, the v.c version seems to get good reviews but there is always a worry with quality control on Tamron lenses front and back focusing issues etc. and the reviews of the Tamron show that.

Still miss my 70-300vr even now it was and away my favourite lens when I owned it but I can't really justify having that and a 70-200 vr2.
 
Does anyone know how much heavier / bigger the 70-300vr FX is compared to the 55-300 DX lens? I was under the impression the FX lenses are heavier and larger

I am after a telephoto lens as I'm going travelling at the end of the year but I'm trying to keep the weight down as I will already have my D90 with kit lens 18-105, Sigma 10-20 and Nikon 50mm already in the bag!

whay i'm confused your previous post did not imply anything hooky?

also the 70-300 VR is great but I have found it is soft beyond 250 and as previous folk have said O also find F8 sweet.
