I'm thinking of getting one of these lenses, any comments good or bad.

First " extra" lens I bought and I couldn't be more pleased, although I did buy used just before the 55-300 came out for not much more, if any, and I think I might have been tempted just to go for that one just to get a new lens, but having said that I am certainly not disatisfied and I'm sure you won't be.
And I think I'm right in saying the 70-300 is a full frame lens as opposed to the 55-300 being a DX, not that it matters to me having a D90.

Thanks for the replies more or less made my mind up, been using a Sigma 70-200 but finding it a little heavy now and slow to focus and missing to many shots.

I have the Nikon 70-300VR on my D7000 and the tamron 70-300VC on my Canon 7D, yes i know different cameras etc but the Nikon wins out of those two lenses, that is not to say the the Tamron is no good, in fact far from it and I am sure you would be happy with either lens its just that the Nikon is the better choice in my opinion, but also at a premium over the Tamron.

great lens my fave.
works fantastic on my D7000 @ F7.1/F8
I think its seriously under rated.

Use it on my D600 and absolutely love it.

Perhaps you could give reasons as to why the Nikon is better, for the OP's sake.

I have the Nikon and it's a fine lens. The VR works well, and it's relatively light and compact. It's arguably a tad soft at the long end (and I've struggled to have any taken with this lens accepted by Alamy) but overall it's one that I'd be reluctant to sell as it's so useful.

I've used mine a lot on a selection of SLRs from an F65 to a D800 and love it on all of them. VR really does give at least 3 stops extra (4 on a good day!) over a non stabilised lens. It's noticeably sharper than the earlier non stabilised version.

Since selling my Sigma 150-500 OS, I've taken to using the 70-300 and cropping into the resulting image (one of the reasons I upgraded to the 800 from the 700) and it copes very well with this method.

Thanks again for all the replies, is it a fast focusing lens? as when taking a burst of shots with my Sigma 70-200 on rallies it's out of focus on every other shot, if that makes sense.

I use mine for drag racing and don't have any issues at all with focus speed. Anything that I may have missed ( in terms of being oof ) is down to user error due to shutter speed / focal length

Yes, it's fast focussing. Both with original snap on focus and follow focussing (ie it picks up the subject PDQ and keeps it in focus as it moves towards/away at speed (100MPH+).

I agree the 70-300 vr lens is an under-rated lens especially for the money. The one I had was very sharp and pretty quick at focussing. Its not as quick a a 70-200 vr or a 300 f4 but its not slow either. It is also a facion the prie of a 70-20 vr too. Its definitely worth trying, the only reason I sold mine was because I could justify having a 70-300 vr and a 70-200 vr. Sometimes I do wish I still have it.
