right people, i want to sell my 70-200 and get a lens with 300mm reach, want to get to a couple of race meets this year, not got loads of cash, so is one better than the other, and is it worth the extra ££££.

if i go sigma route where is the cheapest place to pick one up????

fwiw i had the sigam on my old sony and it did pretty well.

I've had both. My experience is that the Nikon is well worth the extra if you want it for the reach.

The sigma cano. Version produces nice images, but the focus is noisy and very slow!

I looked into this a short while ago, and the general consensus (especially as you will be wanting a faster focus) was the Nikon is worth the extra. That's the lens I chose in the end - and I'm extremely happy with it and haven't regretted spending the extra. The images are sharp (they'd be even better if the buffoon behind the camera knew what he was doing), quick to focus, well built, etc etc - and for me it had the added bonus of taking the same size filters as my existing 18-105 lens (another saving on having to buy any more).

Oh, and I saved by getting second hand - there are some great prices on the classified section at the moment.
