hello folks I purchased a used Kenko 1.4 DGX TC from MBP used just to have a play with on my Nikon 70-300VR just wondering if anyone has used this. I know it drops the max AP to F8 when full out at 300mm and AF can become compromised at low light.

I pretty much always use the lens @ about f8 anyhow, popped it on last night and had a test and seems quite nice, light was rubbish and rainy but initial impressions are in good light I hope it will be a cheap winner.

anyone?

I was under the impression you couldn't use TC with this lens?

you cannot use the nikon one as the rear element of the lens bumps the TC element but the Kenko clears it ok.

I checked with them and its on there ok chart.

according to the EXIF data at 300mm it pushes to 420mm

TBH, I found that the IQ was so much reduced with the TC fitted that I was better off just cropping into the image and accepting that I couldn't print as big! One of my reasons for buying a D800 was to be able to crop and still print big. The TC solution is a lot cheaper than a D800 or a longer lens and a LOT lighter than a 150-500 OS!!!

i'm going to test for a while and see what I find, I agree that the IQ does drop when you get cropping but then again I thought it would, I think I want Nikon to start making Carbon Fibre lenses !

oddly enough I am finding on my test pics that IQ is ok but only 50% of the time, I think thats more the loss is AF is a bit patchy.

Thank you. Would you recommend it or not worth the bother / hit and miss focusing ? What model tc is it ( new to looking at these )

So long as the light is good it's completely fine, well worth it in my opinion. You soon get used to focusing with it. Unsure on exact Model (its upstairs and kids are quiet so not rocking that boat!) Just do it and sell it on if its not for you. Think there are a couple in classifieds at the moment.

Ok, thanks. I guess it's the dgx mc4 but not the pro version. Will have a look in the classifieds

This actually looks not too bad from the sample posted bit if a surprise.
