Nikon 70-300 VR on eBay

Can anyone work out what the deal/scam is here? Clearly way, way too cheap so firmly in the 'too good to be true' camp, but does eBay + Paypal make it a slightly safer risk for the brave 24 who have already paid up?

Reasonable feedback over a number of years, not much selling activity though. Just noticed they sold 39 this morning, so the best part of £6400 taken today on that lens alone.

Not sure how it works, but the people who have parted with cash may as well have held onto it rather than having to go through the rigmarole of claiming it back from Paypal.

Unless of course it turns out to be a genuine listing and the guy is just desperate to get rid of all those lenses (which would easily fetch £300+ brand new on ebay) for a quarter of retail price.

Reported it as suspected fraudulent, for what it's worth.

Not necessarily, Curry's ebay outlet does them for £300 from time to time

edit: feedback is not the best though, would probably avoid

78 sold at £98, I can't possibly see how it's legit, even the most battered used copy of that lens is worth more than that. Considering he could have easily sold 78 at £200 a pop over a slightly longer period this just feels like a smash and grab.

The listings have vanished completely now (even in sold items) so it seems like it was spotted and dealt with, hopefully the 78 unfortunate folk are getting refunds.

This was received on Monday morning. A full refund was given today without me having to report anything. Well, it would have been annoying if it had been genuine and I hadn't bought it
