Nikon 70-300 VR LENS

Hi all.
Have just brought a 70-300 VR lens. With being new to Nikon, I have turned the VR switch to on. But the one underneath Normal/Active. What should I have that on. I shoot normal shots, going away to Italy next week and I shoot motorsport also.
Another thing is a filter fir it. Should I get a hoya pro1 UV digital filter? Or a standard Hoya hmc multi coated????
Another thing camera bag? Crumpler pretty boy 7500 or Muffin Top 7500?? They look the same to me? Does anyone have one? If so could you give me some feedback on what there like please as a overall bag, or any one got any ideas?

I think it tells you in the little instruction book / leaflet ... from memory Active is if you are in a moving vehicle, normal is for all other use.
 
Thanks. Just got the book and had a look and pretty much understood it as that too. So I guess just leave it on normal all the time. Would it hurt or alter anything if Active?

Thanks for the info and the link. Very helpful. So I will turn it off. Until on a boat i'n a car or i'n a plane.
 
Does anyone have anymore i'n put i'n the filters for me? Or for the crumpler bag? As I need to order one and no one local so I can try one out. And not got time to order and send back and re order. Wondering if the D-90 will fit i'n with the 70-300 lens on to with the 18-105 lens and a small Sony camcorder and bits?
 
Everyone saying don't bother with filters!! I have always used them!!
 
The 70-300 VR is a useful little lens, and for reasons that I've forgotten, it's the only lens I own that has a filter on. Might be coincidence, but I keep getting rejections from Alamy for anything I submit taken with this lens. TBH, I wouldn't bother with a filter and just exercise greater care when using it. Touch wood, I've never had any problems with any of my other lenses so far.

Can't help you with the bag as I don't have a D90 - do the bag manufacturers websites not give interior dimensions? I seem to recall Lowepro do. Might be worth measuring the camera and lens and seeing what the websites say.

BTW, the word "in" doesn't have an apostrophe between the i and the n:p
 
If you want a protective filter I'd use a Nikon 67mm NC Neutral Color. Or a Hoya Pro1 Digital Protector.
 
I don't know anything about the Crumpler bag, but the 70-300 fits snuggly in a Lowepro Slingshot 200 bag either mounted on the D90 or in one of the lens compartments and there is still room for three additional lenses.
 
be carefull with crumplers. they are not as big as they appear.
 
I'm getting that impression. Was looking at measurements and they seem small and it's a xxxl size!!

I'm torn on the filter thing. As always used them and everyone saying not to. My head confussed. Just don't seem right i'n my mind not having a uv filter on the end. If I do use it won't effect my quality of pictures will it??
 
I've never used a filter on my 70-300 but always put the lens hood on. As for the bags I wouldn't even consider buying a bag called a muffin top, they are very strange at Crumpler...:lol: I use Lowepro, they're solid and comfortable and you can fit your kit in them, seems sensible to me.

Been done to death on here, but the short answer is yes it will, adding another air to glass surface will effect the light transmission, there is no glass made yet that does not.

The question is whether you will see the effect, or not.
 
Martin thanks for that. I'm not sure I would know the difference in quality? Just always used filters to protect. Does it make a lot of difference?
 
Andysnap I have a low pro slingshot. Just that I'm going to Venice, bologna, Florrence, Rome, sorrento next weekend I fly and didn't like the thought of my slingshot on my back. Liked the lol of the crumpler bags as don't stand out as a camera bag to draw attention.
 
Ah I understand now. I generally just use a camo rucksack for out and about shooting it fits most of the stuff I need and just looks like a rucksack.

Good idea and have a normal rucksack but the camera is new and would like to know it's i'n a safe padded bag.

Possibly not, however I do not use them ... personally I prefer insurance, as that protects me from theft, something a filter cannot do.

If it gives you peace of mind use one :thumbs:
 
Martin thanks again. Just now which one? Jessops own? Hoya multi layered or Hoya pro1 for digitAl lenses and CMOS sensors??
