Hi all

I'm off to Monza at the start of Sept for the F1 GP and considering getting a new lens to take with me.

I currently have an 18-200 VRII lens and looking for something with a little more zoom.

Is the 70-300 any good for motorsport ?

We are doing a road trip down to Monza through the Alps so hoping to stop for some great shots. I'm happy with the 18-200 for touristy shots but for motorsport I don't think it's that great.

any advice would be champion as they say

Works pretty well in my experience. I've mainly used it for rallys but I'm sure it'll do just fine for F1. Focussing is fast and IQ very nice. I've heard people say its soft at 300mm but I've had three of them now and I've never felt let down. I suppose the only downside would be its relatively small max aperture though only an issue in poor light. To improve greatly in that area though would be a lot of money.

I've used mine for slower forms of motorsport (club type racing at Castle Combe) and it does the job there very well.
Monza in September shouldn't challenge its relatively small aperture.

great news, I'll be looking for a good deal on one now them.

also a light weight monopod as well I think

Not sure you'll need a monopod with the 70-300 VR. The VR will allow relatively slow shutter speeds and the lens isn't too heavy to leave dangling around your neck (on an OpTech or similar [neoprene] strap).

The question in my mind is how much more will it offer you over the 18-200? I don't have the answer but if I were in your shoes I'd find out before blowing the cash on a new lens, especially as you'll be travelling around.

travelling by car so carrying it aint a problem.

what other lens would anybody recommend for landscape and touristy stuff ?

24-120 f/4. 18-70 kit lens.

The jump from 200-300mm isn't really that much. It equates to the subject being ~25% larger. It's similar to the difference between 100 and 150mm on your lens.

You're really in a position where the only reason to upgrade is for a specific purpose. The lens you have is fine as a general purpose "tourist/landscape" lens.

If it is for motor sports/sports I'd be looking for longer/faster/sharper.
If it is for landscapes I'd be looking for sharper/less distortion.
If it is for general purpose I'd be looking for sharper/faster.
