I'm looking for a longer lens for my Z7ii used mainly for landscape, so I don't fancy lugging a 2.8 up any big hills and at the moment there are no native Z lenses suitable. Obviously the extra range of the 70-300 would be great but I'm wondering if anyone else has used both and has a strong preference based on performance (especially on the higher MP bodies). I know neither are rated as weather resistant but again, any experience of this would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Pete

I had the 70-300 VR on a D750 and wasn't impressed at the long end.

I'd go for the 70-200 f4 out of the 2.

The 70-300 AF-P is noticeably better than the preceding 70-300 VR.
Have a read at Thom Hogan's assessment.

The AF-P new is probably cheaper than a used 70-200 F4.

I've owned all 3 and have kept the 70-300 AF-P FX. The 70-200 F4 is an excellent lens and you can't go wrong with either.

I had the F4 70-200 on my D810 and it was great. Sold it when I changed to a Z7 but wish I had kept it as I ended up buying a F2.8 VR2 due to missing the versatility of the focal range. F2.8 is massively bigger and heavier and I would say only slight improvement on IQ to that of the F4. 2nd hand can be got for a bargain also.

Thanks @bobman I'll have more of a search for a pre-owned one.

Is there only one version of the 70-200 f/4, the one introduced in 2012?

As far as I know. That’s the one I had.
AF-S 70-200 f4 G ED VR
its a gold ring lens.
