I agree with Trig's, I asked the same question and with a little push from Kevshore's photos made me buy it :) well worth it.

The TC 2.0 III is supposed to be the dogs danglies and has been in very short supply but now seems reasonably easy to get hold of. I don't have an immediate need but will buy one this year as we have been lucky enough to get some Olympic tickets so want one for that.

i have searched and searched, everyone has a different oppinion on it

I've used the 2.0 TCIII on the VRI version of the lens and as someone who has never got on with tcs in the past (have owned both the Nikon and Kenko 1.4 versions) I have to say I was pretty impressed.

I do when I have too, it's an ok combo but far from the IQ I'd like. Ok for web pics but if you want anything high res then the quality isn't that great

i cant find your TC pics can you link to them?

well i have one coming from fixation tommorow now.

Not to be a nosey sod - but how much was it from them for the TC-20E III - just that it mentions to phone for prices....

Just might do the same as you an sell my TC-17E II & fund a TC-20E III

Cheers

jacobs had them for £408 delivered, grays wouldnt price match so i asked fixation who did match the price.

i went with them as a big dealer and barry their technician is very good. :)

wait till tommorow and i may have some thoughts on it.

I'll wait & see your thoughts

no sign of the postman it puts my nerves on edge waiting :)

the 1.7 is so good i am not expecting to much differance [only reach i expect] then i wont be disapointed

nikon got the 1.4 and 1.7 right the first time maybe thats why they didnt upgrade them first, i have seen the original TC2 descibed as a paperweight harsh maybe.

its here its bigger and heavier than the 1.7

the light is to poor to try at the moment, but it feels righ.

hand held, low light i could get exactley the same with the 1.7

i need to test on BIF/aircraft etc.

unedited and i shoot JPEG :D

A couple of shots with 70-200 VRII and TCE 2.0 III

I would be interested in seeing the any same shots with both the TC-20EIII & TC-17EII on 70-200mm VRII with the D700 ...........

it was very bright today so i used it today with my D700 and 300mm f4 just to see

besides me having trouble keeping steady with a 600mm fl even with a monopod it just didnt feel right.
the focus even on still objects hunted like mad even manual was a bitch
to be honest i didnt like the 1.7 on it either

so i go back to what i have always believed/been taught

F2.8 or faster TC1.4,TC1.7 or the new TC2

F4 or slower TC1.4 only

you may disagree but thats it for me now :)

There's lots of ifs and buts with using a 2x TC and whilst I don't doubt that the new one is much better than the old one, you will ultimately be having the same issues as using the 1.7x, only half a stop less light to play with.

If you look at the people who are getting good results you'll see most have equipment that can cope with loosing 2 stops of light and maintaining high shutter speeds still - which is all about high ISO capability...

Think carefully about the 2x, its simply not the magic bullet you might think it is, although the new one is better, it still has the same pitfalls as the old one because nothing can fix physics ;-)

 Damm mine just arrived today........

SC - Did you find its quite big (bigger than what I thought it would be) - esp the damm gold box its packed in :suspect:

Oh well, don't forget the golden rule of not shooting it wide open - if you start with a f2.8 lens, you will be down to f5.6 when you add the 2x, then add set your exposure for a further two stops further down - should be sweet around the f9/f10 mark.

If shutter speed is important in your shot, use manual mode with auto ISO, then you can control aperture and shutter speed manually and still get automatic results... thats my top tip for Nikon TC use ;-)

Thanks for the tip - much appreciated

Here's a 100% crop from a shot (sooc) with the VRI + TC 2.0 III at 5000 iso in very poor light, through a thick (and dirty) window.....

 Self portrait I see then Graham :whistling:

edit: Yes I edited your quote to what it should've been by the way :p

Been talking with my buddies here in KL and the general consensus is to get the 200/400mm or better still get the 400mm f4.......need to save for that puppy though:):)

Errrm well, yes of course the best way of getting 400mm is a 400 f2.8 prime. However its a huge massive beast and costs approximately 20 times what a 2x TC does.
