Hi guys, I'm new here:wave:

What's the reason for the Nikon shortage?
I've been trying to buy a 70-200VR and keep getting told 'there's none in Europe'

Surely they must be able to turn around a popular lens like this to accomodate demand?

treat em mean
keep em keen

I don't know, its the greatest "keep demand on the up" strategy ever devised...just don't sell any.

The interwebz sorta circumnavigates regional lens droughts, so, they make you grab you're ankles on the guarantee....

They did that with the 18-200VR, people waiting months for theirs or paying a premium.
I dont know the reason, probably some marketing plow....

IIRC Nikon have tripled their lens manufacturing capacity in the past 4 years but still can't keep up with demand. I imagine it's especially difficult with their pro grade lenses, which are still built with some human labour and they have to recruid and train people. They all seem to be permanently out of stock.

Low stock levels leading up to a replacement isn't that unlikely either.

Its not just Europe. The US have a shortage as well. Have you contacted Kerso? I bought mine a few weeks ago from him for £950+£20pp. When he got mine he said he had also got another 3. Not sure if he's sold them by now though. Great bit of glass though.

I bought a 70-200 VR last week and another the week before that. If there's a shortage of them, nobody told Jacobs in London.

Yep I am renting one off you stewartr and depending on how good I find it for my needs will be sourcing one. They are out there, just need to shop around.

I'm assuming the HK sellers are not an option? I'd like to hear what exactly a supposed new version of the 70-200 would include/exclude...

According to the British Journal of Photography's recent 1DmkIII v D3 head to head article, the Nikon 70-200 2.8 is rather underwhelming and they reckon Nikon needs to produce a full frame version ASAP.

Meaning what, exactly? It is a full frame lens. Do the BJP reckon it's unacceptably soft in the corners of a full frame, or something like that?

And anyway, how do they reach that conclusion by comparing a full-frame Nikon with a crop-sensor Canon?

Er, and, Gary they are a bit underwhelmed with the aurofocus of the D3 as well, the 1Dmk3 with latest software wallops it, according to them. Funny Mr Galbraith hasn't said anything recently, been awaiting his update for months now, and also his review of the 1Ds mk3.

Stewart, I've a pdf of the article, would you like me to email it to you?
Send me a pm with your address if you want.
George

Don't think these things will ever be a worry for me :D I havent a clue how to even remotely utilise even 10% of the camera!!!

Gary.
