Can anybody explain this one? I have an old very abused 70-200 2.8 vr1. The vr itself has never worked in the time I've owned it. It just sort of whirrs for a second or two when you turn it on then nothing. Since I've owned the lens I've had a few cameras, a D3, a d600, a d70s, a d610 and a Fuji s5. The vr hasn't worked on any of them.

This week I received my new d810 and I tried the 70-200 on it this morning and low and behold, the vr is working beautifully. Still won't work on my d3 though. Can anyone explain that?!

No idea, i had the same lens and it works on my d3 without a problem. When the VR engage it does do that weird tracking thing for a sec or 2 before you can press the shutter to stabilize the shot. I know he VR won't engage on the back button focus on my D3 and preciously own d700. It works when half press the shutter.

Talking about that i hardly use the VR because i shoot sports with that lens.

Very peculiar, I don't know how the lens and body communicate, but you would have thought its solely to do with the body with regards to the signal to attempt focus, and that as far as the lens is concerned, half pressing the shutter and using back button would have no effect on the signal received. I'm probably wrong. It's all Japanese magic to me.

Do you have any ideas why it could be?

Cheers folks. I think the mystery is solved, because the VR has stopped working on the D810 now as well. So I think it was just coincidence. I don't know what's up with the lens, may be it's just some contacts inside but for a brief 2 hour period today, it decided to offer full functionality again. It's gone back into hibernation now. Who knows when/if it'll work again!

What a bloody tease eh. Suppose if it's not something you don't know to miss, it's not too bad. Ever thought of sending her in to Nikon, or do you have the fear? £££££££££££££££ :P

Definitely fear the ££££'s! Plus for what I use it for I rarely need vr. Would be nice to have the option though.

I'm glad to have it, but I do wish I was a VR virgin... It's always easier not knowing what it's like. But when you haven't tried it, it's all you want. :P
