nikon 70-200 vr + 1.7x

Depends what your budget is. I have the 70-200mm vr II and yesterday bought the 2.0 III converter.
I am stunned at its performance. I now have a usable 140-400mm f5.6
These are none scientific shots taken today, just as a quick test.
Shot at 400mm f5.6. iso 800.

I'm hoping to test it better at the weekend.
But so far I like what I see.

I have used the 70-200mm vr I with the 1.7 and I was happy with it. But this is something else.

That'll be the vr I then. A superb lens. I loved mine before upgrading to the vr II. Would happily use a 1.7 on it. I did plenty of times.
Some say you lose image quality. I found mine to be good.

Or the 70-200mm with the 1.4.
That is a nice set up. you're not loosing much. you can easily crop that bit.

Its not a combo I've had much luck with. Sure it works and you get an image but I file it under "emergency use only".

Someone else on here was asking about it a few weeks ago, I told him my opinion, he bought the 1.7x and tried it and now agrees with me :D

The 1.7x works fine with my 300f4... I use it loads.

I have both the 70-200 VRI and the 300/4 with a Kenko 1.4X T/C and both lenses work really well with the T/C The better results from the prime over the zoom, but for obvious reasons. Mainly shooting motorsport and never needed the T/C outside of that, but if you want examples I can dig a few out for you if you like.

Slightly off topic, sorry, but would £1520 be a good price to pay for the 70-200 VRII brand new?

It seems to have settled to about that price at the moment.
