If you look at my avatar you can see that I use my 70-200 on a monopod. What has happened is the grommet on the lens has become unusable and actually ended up on the thread of my monopod thus meaning I am unable to mount the lens the way I like it.
I ordered this pack of Tripod converter screws https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071FJQK4D/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which arrived today but the grommets don't fit the 70-200, does anyone know the correct size I need?

Sounds like the thread insert has failed, I suspect this'll be difficult to repair if it has pulled out. Might be easier just to replace the whole foot with something like this?
Sounds the same to me. Isn't there two screw thread points on the tripod foot? I have an arca Swiss plate on the bottom of my tripod foot on the 70-200 so that I'm not directly screwing to the monopod. An arca Swiss clamp is screwed onto the monopod, it lets me quickly attach to either a monopod or the tripod.

I only have one lens with a foot (Tamron) and it does not have an insert but the thread is directly taped on the foot (an engineering shop could drill it, tap it to on oversize imperial something or other size, and if it exists in imperial sizes use helicoil to bring it back to its original size ... yadda yadda yadda.

As others have said, I too prefer to use a tilt head (manfrotto) and then another plate system screwed on the head so the plate can be left more permanently on the lens.

EDIT: or the foot could be taped to 1/4" size if it is not that size already, and use the large thread connector if your monopod has one.

If you just tap a new hole it will only last a few weeks, inserting and removing a stainless steel thread (on the monopod) will trash the new thread in the aluminium very quickly, that is why Nikon use a thread insert.

Insert a steel insert then? Which appears to be what the OP has tried to do (with a brass insert) ...

Arghhh, I really thought the correct size helicoil insert (whatever size it is) would be an obvious simple fix.

Helicoil is an engineering thing forget I mentioned it. The problem you got is the old insert (grommet as you called it) ended up on the monopod. I can only guess it was screwed in place at the time of manufacture, so as it has come off it has ripped all the thread ... nothing will screw in its place just like that.

Are those you bought too large or too small?

Does the foot look like this one https://parts.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/lens-parts/af-s-70-200-tripod-foot-assembly.html
i would rather look for a replacement foot but that is me.

It's not the foot, it's the physical lens collar and the grommet is too large.

Thank you for the links, I think I'll make the purchase. What is the part number for a genuine Nikon one out of interest?

If too large forget the repair ... you would need to drill the hole to some very specific size, fit an imperial size hellcoil etc. and then fit what you bought. Not really worth it and may not last that well.

The original part number is 1C999-853, no idea where you can purchase from though. Be careful with the four JIS type screws, it is very easy to damage these with a Philips screw driver, they look very similar but are significantly different.
