Yes
Right I have got to go to South Africa on a business trip so am going a day early so I can do a day safari.

I currently have a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 but was thinking of upgrading this in the near future to a Nikon 70-20 f2.8VR.

So do I continue with my upgrade plans but buy it earlier with a Nikon 1.7TC or do I scrap that idea and buy a Nikon 80-400 f4-5.6VR and just keep my Sigma.

Will the 200mm with the 1.7TC (so thats 340mm) be long enough for some good photo's on a safari?

if money allowed, i'd probably be more tempted to go with the 80-400 AND a TC. I'm not sure that 340mm would give you enough reach (especially if the beasties are feeling a bit shy).

The 80-400 is not suited to any TC's, not fast enough.

I have both lenses and prefer the 80-400.If i have to leave one behind the 70-200 stays at home.

i have the 70-200 &1.7 tc which gives a maximum apeture f4.8 @ 340mm .

so not much difference to f 5.6 @ 400mm .

the 70-200 & 1.7 tc option is approx twice the price of the 80-400 , its also very heavy.

IMO i'd go for the 80-400.

Opps its a bit too late guys, I ordered the 70-200 earlier today! Have I made a mistake?

Not at all. The glass is supberb and if you do get the 1.7x tc you'll be ok

You will not regret buying this at all :)

The 80-400 is not a lightweight, let me assure you of that....

I did order the 1.7TC with it too.

I will persevere with the 70-200 for a while longer yet. I just don`t get along with it,oe perhaps I like the 80-400 too much, anyway if that does not change i`ll flog it....
