I doubt if it would get resold, I mean why take your competitor's products out of circulation, only to put them back in again - but this time at a much lower price. The whole object of the exercise would be to convert as many pros as possible to the Nikon system - not to provide a cheap source for secondhand Canon gear :cuckoo:


I would imagine, again if the story is true, that the marketing budget would have allowed for simply writing off the value of the Canon gear and it would simply be crushed - that idea should ruin a few breakfasts around here :lol:

On the flip side, just think how you de-value your competitors product by a massive amount of it being dumped onto the second hand market in one go ;)

Actually, I did consider that, but surely it would be underhand and devious and not the sort of thing a big company would do to it's competitor? ;):lol:

The amount of "free" advertising that is to be gained from an event like the Olympics dwarfs the cost of a few (albeit expensive) camera lenses. Why do you think VAG (Volkswagen Audi) "lends", and by that I essentially mean gives, cars to the British royal family? It's the same thing, it's all about media exposure.

If the pro togs/royal family are seen using, and therefore endorsing, a particular brand then it sends over a message to the hoi polloi viewing public, - not,"oh, look these cameras/cars must have been free ", but rather "oh,look, there is someone in at the top of their game/in a position of respect (pushing it a bit in the case of the royals I know, but bear with me :naughty:) who could use any brand they wanted and have chosen 'Brand X', therefore it must be the best available."

It's all about brand exposure, I mean you don't really buy all that nonsense about Canon L glass being white to help keep the glass cool in extreme heat do you? In realilty it's white so that it is readily identifiable to a target market, in this case you and I, wherever press 'togs gather.

So, to recap, a relatively small amount of money invested in getting your brand/product exposed to a worldwide audience will, in theory, repay itself many,many times over.

It's hardly a few though is it? Every major news agency in the world has photographers at the games. Considering the amount of gear pro sports shooters have it's going to cost at least £20,000 to equip them with new gear. I really doubt the halo effect is really that great. There again, if anyone has a reputable source to back this up I'll happily believe it, until then though I'm still extremely sceptical.

Okay, but not every pro shoots Canon, say a generous 70% of those at the Olympics do and say that equates to 700 'togs. Now say 10% can be persuaded to change, that's 70 @£20k each, that's £1.4 million (minus ongoing sales to these individuals), from Nikon's global marketing budget,which doesn't buy you much in terms of global exposure nowadays.

How much do you think Nikon USA pay each year for product placement in tv shows like NCIS and Dexter, I bet it's more than £1.4 million........
 
Oh and :thumbs: to Rog for the Clifton Cameras tip, that's mine on it's way from them now :)

They still have one or two left, so if anyone is needing a 70-200 VR then a quick call (or website visit) would be advisable ;)
 
I noticed that Clifton Cameras had them in stock this morning when I checked on camerapricebuster.co.uk. Although when I checked my bank account it was a:nono::lol:

Fair enough. I first brought up the subject so I'll see whether I can remember where I found it.

For what it's worth, I thought it was (if true) more of a publicity stunt than a workable offer. If I were a pro covering the Olympics, the last thing I'd want to do would be to switch to a totally different system with no real time to learn how to use it properly. If the actual pros think like that, then it wouldn't cost Nikon much money.

i have been waiting like 6 months on and off.

then when i have the cash, no one had one argghhhh i was so annoyed...

i wanted one so much i was going to hire one, for the Big Cat day at the beginning of the month, and i could not even get one then.....

so now i have it am so happy

I couldn't see how they could justify the extra over the 80-200 (which is :thumbs::thumbs:), five minutes with the 70-200 and I knew ;)
