Yes
I have a hankering for something "Arty" and cannot decide on either of these. Currently have Sigma Arts 20 & 35mm, and a 70-200 Nikon. Would 58 be too close to the 35, even though I would be using them for different subject matter mainly.

GAS can be a bitch ;)

The 58nm in my opinion is sharp as a pin but over priced! My father bought one! It's nice but why......
the 85mm on the other hand is a cracking lens and very useful length

Yeah it is expensive, that`s for sure. I did have a 1.8G but moved it on. It`s the rendering and bokeh I`m after :)

Samyang if you can manual focus!

Nikkor 50mm f/1.2? Great for portraits (if you like the bases of the eyelashes in focus but the front of the eyeball slightly OOF...)

More seriously, save your money until you KNOW what you want rather than spending now on something you think might be nice to have.

Re f1.2, see above ;)
Fair point mate, and I don`t really need anything. I did like the 85 focal length, but not the oof areas wide open so much with the 1.8.

Fiiiiiiiiiiffffffffffffffttttttttttttttyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiggggghtmmeffffffffffwonnnn.fffffffffoooooooooouuuuuuuuurrrrr

Haha took me a bit to decipher that :D

I challenge you to the bokeh and rendering test:

If you had 50 random images from the 58mm and 50 from the 50mm 1.4 G for 1/3 of the price, could you tell which lens was used? Here are the Flickr pools:

(just don't ask me to justify owning the 105 DC :) ).

Bokeh is totally different, and the colours (to me) seem much nicer, Also I like the way the 58 separates the subject.
I have had 1 50 1.4D and 2 G`s but never really got on with the focal length. Maybe 58 will make that difference.

Completely different.

There's always the 105 1.4 ;)

Now that`s way off budget ;)

85 i expect would fit better with what you currently have. 28/58/105 or 35/85/135 seem to be the trio's i see quoted the most

The 35 is very clinical though, so in reality (my mind), they are two different beasts. It`s a hard one.

The Nikon 35 isn't but it's not as sharp. Nicer rendering though.

Yeah I`d seen that, but it would cost too much chopping it in. I also use mine for architecture and general snapping, along with the 20 mil ;)

I bought a 58 1.4 recently. Beast!

Just go check out the FredMiranda Nikon forums to see what it can do.

How are you getting on with it?

Love it! It's a bit disconcerting to start with as images don't appear sharp (they are but not say Sigma ART sharp) but the fall off and out of focus areas are really nice.

Cool, I`ve read that it takes a bit of getting used to. I didn`t opt for sigma because of the clinical sharpness. Fancied trying something that just renders beautifully instead.
Seems like I`m swaying toards the 58 (for now) ;)

Definitely renders differently. It's a bit of a marmite lens but I think that's as much to do with the price as anything else.

I have the 58mm, 85mm and 105mm and love them all... if I had to part with one then the 85mm would, reluctantly, be the first to go.

I remember when the 58 first came out it seemed like ridiculous money, I waited a year or so then paid £800 for a mint eBay used one which feels like a good buy... especially as I could probably get my money straight back if I wanted... not a big risk if you're patient and careful who you buy from, you can always flip it if you fancy another change in a few months.

Too much comparison to 50mm prices I reckon ... £££ for another 8mm ;)

That`s interesting  I`m tending to think the 85 is more specialist, where as from feading and looking at images, the 58 can kinda do both.

Completely missed this thread, sorry mate.

I'm LOVING mine. My 85 does a job but this has sat on the one body these last two months and I've used little else, love the rendering.

One from this morning at f1.8 (I prefer around 2.2 usually) This one is a little sharper than the one I posted on the D610 thread earlier, but prefer the expression of the other.

Oh man, now I want the 58mm! I've seen some real magic with this lens just lately.
