This is why i am after a collar. It is a light lens, it shouldn't do any harm to the camera if the camera itself is mounted on a tripod, I used one for a couple of years with no problems. It sounds more like your tripod head is at fault.
AFAIK there isn't one. Sounds like you need a better tripod/head.
Seems to be the case before posting i searched for one. Idea being get balance with ring no drop,What they say, there isn't a collar for this lens because it is light and perfectly fine to have the camera mounted to the tripod. Besides, if you mounted it with a collar you would have the same problem but in a different direction.
Buy a better tripod/head.
Using a 7200, did some testing with lens, it is the head, i'll have to brush up my techniqueWhat camera are you using? The 55-300 isn't really heavy so the head must be a bit pox.

That's rated to 10kg so should be enough to hold your d7200 and 55-300 that weighs at most 2-2.5kg-20-25% loading. How long have you had the tripod? Can you send it back as it should be able to hold that without dropping.one of THESE Rob

After some testing with framing, the drop happens from the housing for the ball, which in turn drops in the centre of tripod, i' ll try and look at it in more detail when i have a bit more time.I'm guessing your are locking it as tight as it can go? There is no tension setting knob that could be the cause of the dropping? On ball heads I've used the framing changes slightly when locking up the ball head but when fully locked it doesn't move/drop or anything.
