Hi Everyone

I have been looking at the Nikon 55-200MM F/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX lens on amazon and it is only 129 pounds.

I currently only have the 18-55MM lens which is a bit restrictive on the zoom, so was thinking this would be ideal.

Does anyone have any experience with this lens or example of shots taken with this model lens?

Thanks
Karl

I use to own a D5000 and have the exactly same lens and i have been shot with the 55-200 VR on one occasion that i feel it perform very very well.

The lens is good for the price you paid for and the VR is very useful too. I would buy it.

I do have the image save on my computer but unfortunately due to the TP rule i cannot upload them on here because is some pics i took in a football match friendly that have big star players on.

If you PM me your email i could send them to you to check it out.

I have this and use it quite a bit, like you I found the zoom restrictive on the kit lens. More than pleased with the 55-200mm, have used it for all sorts, it's been good for sport (photos of runners at my local club) as well as candid photos at a recent wedding. Well worth it for the price.

I have this lens and have been very happy with it. Must say that I've not used it much recently as I've been taking more macro, however am just about to go off to Norway and suspect it will get a lot more use!
I would recommend it.
I've also gone through two of the 18-55mm lenses and broken both somehow so ended up buying the 18-105 to give me a bit more coverage.

I use this lens coupled with the D5000 for all the sports shots on the Flickr page. I find its good for the price but would much prefer the f2.8 70-200. Sadly i'll never afford it.

Feel free to have a look at the images

I bought one for my D90 and whilst I did like it I really wanted more reach that the 70-300 gives. 'luckily' I was made redundant last summer so sold the 55-200 and bought the 70-300 straight away!

I have this lens too and found it to be very good for the money but needed a bit more reach so have gone for a 70-300 which now leaves my 55-200 redundant so think I will part ways with it soon.

How much do you think you want for your 55-200mm if you are selling it? I may be interested.

I will hopefully be putting it in the classifieds on monday night once I photo it over the weekend and make sure all is good with it. Haven't got a price 100% set in stone yet.

Hi Karl. You have to be a member for 60 days before you will be able to access the classifieds. I know as im not here long enough either!

I am going to buy the lens. I went to currys to try it out and seems good for the money.

I had considered going for the 70-300mm tamron telephoto and macro lens for the same price but after reading he reviews on amazon people were saying there were problems with the auto focus when panning around and the lack if image stabilisation was noticeable.

I will post some pics up once I have bought it.

I have both. I use them for different things and thy both have their place in the budget arena. You will not regret getting the 55-200

I bought the 55-200 to suppliment the 18-55 that came with the d5000, I then bought a tamron 18-200 as every time I wanted to take a shot i always seemed to have the wrong lens on. I have now learned my lesson and the tamron stays at home, the nikon lens are so much better than the tamron, despite the need to swap lens ( usually in a sand storm ! ) The 55-200 is an excellent lens for the price and the vr works really well.

Ive been thinking of carrying a large placcy bag to change lenses in, but i really want one with gloves attached and sealable to keep all the c:eek:p out.
DIY here I come

Yes I have this lens, it is my only lens at the moment. I find it a great general purpose lens.

Hi Karl,
Personally I find my 55-200 more than capable. I got it as part of a bundle with my D5000 and it's still my only "long lens". If you check my threads all the Paradise Park and Red Deer shots were taken with this lens. At £129 you really can't go wrong.

Phil.

Another endorsement for this lens but its value to you depends on what you want to shoot; outdoors in good light, it's great but if light is low, it struggles somewhat (at least mine did).

I got this as part of a kit with a D60 some years ago and am still impressed with its performance.
