Ok,so looking for a second lens for general use.Currently got a 18-55 kit lens, but been told I can get another lens! Yey!mainly want a lens to walk about with as the bag we have is probably only just big enough for a second lens.budget would be under £250. Cheer

(I assume you are talking about Nikon?) They are both great lenses and it's up to you to decide if the extra 100mm is worth the extra cost, it depends on what you want to shoot but for me the 55-200 is probably the better buy given the prices you can get it for.

For me though, if you bought 2nd hand, with your £250 budget you could the 55-200 AND 35mm f/1.8 and then you really don't need any other lenses.

Hadn't thought of that route!!! Is there any difference in picture quality at 200/300 in the lenses?

IQ is as near as the same not to matter, of course the 55-300 is better at 300...

My view though is that 300mm isn't long enough to do serious birding (which is why you normally want long lenses) and 200mm is long enough for everything else.

The 35mm is so good it deserves a place in any DX shooter's bag. I use a D60 with 18-55, 55-200 & 35mm as my travel kit and it covers 99.9% of situations perfectly.

Clearly but is the 300 good at 200?are they both the same speed ect?is there a big difference between the 18-55 at 35 and the 35?

The 300 is good at 200, similar performance.

The 35mm is better than the kit lens @ 35mm in every respect and the kit lens can't do f/1.8.

Have a search for the many threads about the 35mm, if i could only have one lens on me D60 it would be that.

Awesome.think I may go 55-300 then save and get 35.or look out for 2nd hand 55-300!

I love my 55-300. :)

I think I paid 230 quid, and for that money I cant complain. I've used it for a bit of BSB, drag strip action, festivals, a bit of urban wildlife and family holiday stuff, and I'm pretty pleased with the results. I like the bokeh it gives using it for portraits at the short end too. Obviously there's better kit out there, but for the cost it's a shedload of lens IMO.

The 55-200 is supposed to be a great value lens too, but I've never had a go with one.

Sounds like the 300 coverage everything I fancy trying
Think if I get the 200 I may get to a point where I will wish I had the extra 100!what length is the 300?

It's a fair bit bigger than the 200, standing out just short of 5 inches at it's smallest, but on a small camera it's nice to have something to hold on to.

Will need to cut a bit of cardboard to see if it will fit in the bag I have.thinking it wont fit while attached to the camera annoyingly!!!may just get a second hand 55-200.will have to do some measuring.

I had to buy a new bag when I bought the lens, but I figured that as my kit expanded I'd have to do that anyway.

I went with this option and both the 55-200 and the 35mm are great lenses. Might be worth saving a bit more and going for the 70-300mm.

Shame I haven't got access to the for sale area yet!!!oh wellspring how do.you find the zoom range?

It's a good point, if you want 300mm then you probably are worth saving a bit for the 70-300 VR, it is a better lens.

Otherwise my money would be in the 55-200 VR as for the £100 or so you can get it for it is a proper bargain. The money I saved would go towards a 35mm or even an SB400 speedlight.
