I am thinking of getting a Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens. There is the D type which is quite a bit cheaper than the AF-S. Is the difference worth it and how does the f1.4 compare with the 1.8. again is the considerable cost difference worth it:help::bang::bonk:

i was also in the same boat a little while age , do i get the 1.4 or the 1.8?? after being on TP for 2 mins the 50mm 1.4D came up for sale and i grabbed it, i cant compare to the 1.8 because i never got it but im sure there are plenty people here with it and can tell us both

You should be able to get a used 50mm f/1.4 AF-D for about £110-£130 here or elsewhere.

IMHO, no the f/1.4 isn't worth the premium over the f/1.8 at "new" price, but it is if you can pick one up used.

From what I am seeing of the new AF-S and the Sigma 50mm both comfortably outperform the 50mm f/1.4 AF-D. Not sure either are worth double the price either though!

TBH I have a feeling the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is going to be the best of the bunch ultimately.

I've got the 1.4 which I love, but bare in mind there is a new version of this lens due to be released (I may already have been). It'll cost a bit more, but it as much faster internal focusing, and the diaphragm is made from more elements, so out of focus elements should appear even nicer than the older version.

Also, if you are using a D40 (and maybe a D60) the new version is the only one that will work with auto focus.

:D

Recently acquired the 50mm f1.8. I always fancied the 1.4 but as I have a few wants at the moment I decided to get the 1.8 when it came up at the right price - about £50. All I can say is it's sharp, quick and great fun. It makes the camera feel so much better than those 'big' zooms (e.g. 18-70) and it has a lovely colour to it. Breath of fresh air. No doubt the 1.4 is a better lens but I have no complaints about the 1.8.

I've got the new 50mm f/1.4 AF-S on pre-order (expected it to ship on Friday) but not a peep so far.

and it has a lovely colour to it.

Good point on the colours. Before I got mine, I wondered how much difference a lens could really make to colour, but I now see for myself.

Also, it'll get you shots that few other lens will manage (apart from the expensive ones )

wheres my linky gone....... ahhh there it is.. DOH

cracking shots btw

cracking shots btw

 Cheers!

But it has to be said, if they were taken at f3-5, or maybe even f2.8, they would be nowhere near as good (they'd probably be naff). It's all down to the lens :D

So the 1.4 AF-S is out this week? I emailed Jessops asking them when it was due in but they never replied.

The new f/1.4 AF-S looks as if it will be rather good....might even tempt me back to the 50mm fold ;)

A few dealers are showing stock of this now (Jacobs / Dale)

Nikon have today told me that they expect to ship the new 50mm to dealers this week. It was expected last week, but delayed.

I ordered mine today from Dale and it should arrive Thursday.

My old (no doubt soon for sale) 50/1.4 AF- is easily my most used lens alongside my 24-70mm. The new one looks to have smoother out-of-focus rendition, is certainly sharper wide-open and will no doubt be significantly quieter. It's a must-buy for me.

Some recents from the AF-D

I may be interested if its for sale and a Nikon fit :-)

Some stonking images Radiohead
Helped by the cracking high ISO performance of a dream camera body

I'm hoping that some 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lenses may be kicking about second hand when people start trading up to the AF-S.

You haven't had my old one for long! You're worse than me!!!! :lol::lol:

Nice lens Kev, I used it to do some promo shots for a mate's band :D

TBH on the D700 its rather fab, on the D60 (which I use just as much) I can't MF the thing with any sort of accuracy... so probably could use AF for dim light.

Bloody nice lens though :)

I've tried a few dealers today, most of which had stock but either sold out fast or had pre-orders to get through. Jacobs say 'low stock' but then says it ships within 7 working days which makes me think that means they are awaiting more stock?!

What differences are there between the AF-S and the AF-D? image wise and also contruction wise?

Right, managed to find one of these and it should be with me tomorrow, £265 delivered. it's mainly going to be kept in the 600mm bag for when I'm out shooting with the long end but want the odd wider shot that i might stumble across as it's happened a few times before now.
