Nikon 50mm f1.8 afs-why didnt nikon make this a 55mm lens,on croped format a ideal lens for portrait and also bring out a 16mm ,24mm in 35 mm tems so a nice bit of kit of primes could be had.
16mm f2 = 24mm
35mm f1.8 = 52mm
55-58mm f1.8 = 85 ish mm
A nice selection of lenses to take you back to the old days, and maybe a 23.5mm lens to give you a clasic 35mm look.
Not everbody can aford full format so come on Nikon give it a go

I don't think anybody particularly cares about the 5mm difference in focal length, to be honest

I've always thought my 150mm macro would be nicer as a 148.5mm macro.

is that why Nikon made a 10.5 fisheye = approx 16 mm in full format, give or take a little bit, what iam saying is wouldnt it be nice to have some primes on cropped format, not everybody likes zooms.
Cropping dose not give the efect you want,DOF is diffrent with each focal length of lens, thats why a 85 mm is popular in 35mm format for portraits and 35mm for street photography

Cropping won't affect the depth of field. If you were to crop the 50mm so the field of view were the same as a 55mm lens, then the depth of field would also look like that from a 55mm lens. You've just effectively magnified the image.

Besides, the difference you're talking about is so small that it makes no noticeable difference anyway.

Not true, a longer lens will give a more diffuse background.
This is the reason 35mm cameras have smaller DoF than crop cameras.

But the difference between 55 and 50mm is negligible.

I have the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 = approx 75-225 in 35mm terms and of cource there is the Tokina 50-135 f2.8
Cant understand why Nikon,Canon etc didnt produce such a lens, smaller and lighter than the FF lenses. Both Nikon and Canon produced 17-55 f2.8 glass so a nice tele zoom would complete the line up but would still like three fast primes in cropped format
