Yes
I've just spent a week with the 1.4G, absolutely loved it. I only used it at f1.4 a few times, but when I did it was great. I mainly used it at f2.5 give or take a stop or two, as it was razor sharp and had nice background blur.

Obviously now, I want one! However, it's nearly double the price of the 1.8. I'm questioning whether the extra couple of stops is worth an extra £200 (ish).

Anyone used both lenses? How do they compare in terms of sharpness and general image quality?

Oh, and it needs to be the G because my camera doesn't have a built in motor.

Ha ha. Kai sounds weird enough when he speaks in his "normal" voice but when he is pretending to speak Cantonese-style english it is hilarious. Mind you, I am very easily amused.

Btw, f1.4 to f1.8 is actually only half a stop of difference not a couple of stops. That said, when you want f1.4, f1.8 just won't do. And, there's only £99 between them according to Camera Price Buster. Go for the 1.4, you know you want to.

That's the thing, if you've even considered the 1.4 then if you buy the 1.8 you'll always be hankering for the 1.4, do yourself a favour and just get the 1.4 in the first place :D

1.4 all the way !!!

Ok I havent used the 1.8 .... however I do a lot of indoor shots, and a very large amount of my shots are done at 1.6 and 1.4 the DOF is awesom you really can soften a babys face up with perfectly clear sharp eyes and nice soft glowing edge to their face in bad light.

I went for the 1.4 and am so glad I did .... I had he same dilema as you, but was convinced to to for the 1.4 on build qusality and sharpness alone ..... but glad I did in the end any for my reason being the extra f stops !

Just to throw a spanner into the works, have you tried the Sigma 1.4? I've owned both that and the Nikon and the Sigma wins in all areas. AF speed, build, bokeh and sharpness.

I best not mention this then...

I don't know about the G lenses, but I have the f1.4 50mm AI. That's an ancient, manual, lens with a metal barrel and an aperture ring left over from my film days. I love it. I've used the f1.8 (same vintage) too, and there isn't a lot of difference in light gathering capability - half a stop, as Paul said - but I just prefer it.
