Nikon 50mm f1.4 lenses

Apart from better optics I assume it has something to do with the autofocus mechanism.

The G model is SWM so will work with all modern type Nikon cameras, whereas the D type lens will only work with the more higher end of the Nikon market.
 
I'd considering this same issue too, I'll be interested to see the response.

It's better in some flaring situation, but as far as I see there will be almost no difference in the image quality :shrug:

The only advantage u got out of it is the AF-S mechanism, in which I guess you don't really need with your D300 :shrug:

I'm really want to try out the AF-S version but after reading many reviews, the extra money is just not worth it :shrug: (at least to me)
 
Most reviews I have seen reckon there is no difference in the optics and the AFS version is slower to focus then the D version. :)
 
Don't discount the Sigma 50mm 1.4 either.

where are you seeing those reviews? - the AFS outshines the old version in nearly every way.

Having owned both, the areas of improvement are.

Focusing - its not as fast, but no slouch either. However unlike the D the new version doesn't hunt anything like as much in poor light.

Digital artifacts - the new version is much improved in terms of CA etc........

Colour rendition. New version renders colour much more 'true' and matches the other newer Nikons in this respect.

For me, most importantly I like using the new version - was never a big fan of the old. Its much better.

Never used the 1.4 D, however, the 1.4 AF-S renders colors more nicely than the 1.8 D, and in my opinion focuses fine?

With a 50/1.4 focusing speed is never going to be as important as accuracy, which is pretty damn crucial, assuming you shoot it wide open.
