definately - I have one on my D40 right now.

I find manual focus difficult with it, I'll probably swap it for a dedicated MF AI-S version.
 
thanks for quick response , just ordered one online now :) now its finally in stock again!
im use to manual focus now so should be ok hopefully

At which point you'll lose metering (unless you get the appropriate chip installed).

I'm sure you know this, but I'm posting it for the benefit of others who might not.

Yeah, I'm not worried about metering, quite happy in "M" mode - I just like the feel of proper manual focus lenses, so for a D40 I'd just buy a proper MF lens.
