Nikon 50mm af-s 1.4g or 50mm af-s 1.8?

Hi

I had convinced myself to buy the 50mm f1.4g due to all the good press received - I'm fed-up with the soft shots I'm getting with my 18-55mm kit lens.

However, having read some reviews about it (particularly Ken Rockwell's), I'm concerned that the barrel distortion will be noticeable. The new 50mm f1.8 is due out in June, so was wondering what people's thoughts are on holding out for that - particularly as it will probably be a lot cheaper.

Nothing wrong with the 50 1.4G, barrel distortion is minor and nothing to worry about unless you like shooting brick walls, and even then you would struggle to see it.

However on your crop sensor I would suggest that 35mm is a much better focal length, and would suggest that you consider the 35 / 1.8 AF-S.

When I used a D300 my 35mm spent a lot of time on the camera.
 
Ignore 75% of what KR says! 1.4 AFS is a lovely lens, and for me using a crop, prefer 50mm for what I shoot.
 
Thanks for the replies - really useful. The lens does seem to be ideal for what I like to shoot, so was hoping the write up about barrel distortion was a little excessive.

I will take a look at the 35mm version, too.

Ken talks a whole load of... It's a great little lens. One click in Lightroom and distortion is gone.
 
I have the Nikon 50mm F1.4G and I love it I have never noticed any distortion.
