Nikon 50mm 1.8 vs 1.4

Hi everyone

I shoot both indoors and outdoors using natural light and my work covers newborn, babies and children. I use my 50mm 1.8 most of the time and I love it, I'm wondering what improvement does the 1.4 make?

You get more light on the 1.4 which is important if you shoot in natural light and the environment lighting is horrible. How often you shoot wide open on your 1.8?
 
Not enough to justify the cost. Keep the 1.8.
 
What aperture do you use the f1.8 at? Wide open I found both copies I had a bit disappointing but by f2.8 very sharp.

Did you really expect a lens as cheap as the 50 1.8 to be sharp wide open?
 
I have owned the three Nikon 50mm lenses and for me the 1.4D was the best of the lot wide open, if we're talking about sharpness.
 
Thanks for your replies! I do shoot wide open a lot, and I do sometimes find the sharpness disappointing.

Think of it this way. If it was sharp wide open you'd have paid an extra 500 quid for it!

I've seen a number of tests showing that the f1.4G is softer than the f1.8 even when stopped down to f1.8 though :eek: Yes you could argue that the 50mm f1.4 is cheap ish for an f1.4. I think if sharpness if key then you need look no further than the Sigma 50mm f1.4 art, but some still prefer the rendering of the Nikon.

I wouldn't know. I only shoot at 58mm.

If sharpness is the priority I think the Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART lens is the best of the bunch. Or you could consider the Nikon 58mm f1.4 if you like the rendering of that lens.
 
I got the 50mm 1.8G and use it on my Nikon D3. I don't see any problem shooting wide open. I guess my expectation on sharpness is a lot less compare to other people.

Mmmmm 58mm. I'm thinking of selling all my Fuji gear so could treat myself to one of these :love:
