Nikon 50mm 1.8 Users

Hi all.
Recently purchaed a 50mm 1.8 lens, I am a little confused as to the use of the aperture lock.
I understand that if the the lock is placed in its line up of the dots which seems to work ok, however moving the lock out and moving the aperture ring to anything than f22, i get fEE in the aperture window, this happens in Manual or AF focus.
Can some one explain in easy terms what is happening please, am i doing something wrong...

The aperture ring is for use with older cameras such as my F3 and F4, for newer cameras just lock it and leave it.

yes ,thats correct the aperture ring NEEDS to be set @ f22 & locked

and no youre not doing anything wrong

The ability to adjust the aperture via the ring on the lens is a throwback to film camera days, you don't need it with a dslr as the aperture is adjusted from via the camera body. As Nicos says, lock it and leave it

at least i know i was doing nothing wrong and camera is doing its job.
