i have recently purchased a 500mm f4 lens, when adding the 1.4x iii converter, using the D750 i notice fringing on the edges of my image.. is this normal?

I think it depends on which 500 lens version it is, and also which version of the 1.4 converter (TC-14 E II or TC-14 E III )
The TC-14 E II has no limitations, but the E III is "incompatible with certain versions of the 500mm.

i have the 500mm f4 g lens with the TC-14 E III.

Well that should work just fine, according to the Nikon site.
Hopefully some-one who has used this combo will be along shortly to advise.
Good luck.

I don't have the D750 or the 1.4 iii, however I do use my 500 f4 VR with the 1.4 ii on both the D500 & D7200 without these issues.
Some C/A or 'fringing' may occur with certain lenses/conditions and can generally be dealt with in processing (Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom/Photoshop etc). :)

Thanks Gramps, i was just wondering if it was normal thats all. i do tend to crop it slightly in LR to remove it.

Are we talking purple/green fringing to certain parts within the image (e.g. tree branches) or are we talking a fringe around the outside edges of the entire image?

I Have just noticed the 4 corners are dark circular edges.

Sounds more like vignetting, which can happen with certain camera/lens combinations or can be applied ...

It can also be removed in processing software.
Is that something like what you are seeing?

yes mate thats right.

Can you show us an example? You certainly shouldn't be seeing vignetting with that lens.

Looks like a proper wild r deer as well so kudos for that!!!

Ive got the 500mm f4 AFS VR, I've never noticed vignetting like that with any of the 3 nikon teleconvertors? Are you using the standard nikon lens hood?

yes all standard.
could the filter do this, it came with the lens so left it in?
just thought about it.

Take it off and see :)

The filter fits internally near the mount and it should be left in, but would be good to check that it is the right one, not a polariser or something.

A doubt that a polariser would give that effect - more likely to be vignetting but seems odd given the FL of he lens - I get an effect like that on my FF Canon 1Ds II when using the 28-135mm IS USM lens - but certainly wouldn't expect it at 500mm unless the extender is somehow impinging on the image area with a lens hood or something.

The drop-in filter shouldn't cause any problems. Do you have a filter on the front of the lens? If so, remove it and try again. Also try taking some shots without the hood.

Can you borrow a 1.4tc from anybody else to determine if the problem is with that TC? Process of elimination I think.
