Nikon 500mm PF f5.6 or Z 600mm f6.3

No direct comparison experience (other than trying the 600 at the photography show). As a 500 PF user though I've looked at this many times. My conclusion (so far) is that it isn't worth it due to the poor used prices of F mount lenses making the cost to trade up too much for the amount I use it. That said, the 600 PF has come down in price since I last looked :exit:

The 500PF and TC=E14 Mk3 I think is a keeper. When I was contemplating a 500/4 2 years ago, with a view to getting a mirrorless eventually, I was advised to go for an 'E' (which you have) over a 'G'. Because you have the Mk3 TC comms between camera and lens should be optimal - less so if you have Mk2 and a G so it seems.

Given what I paid for my 500/4E I wash quite astonished how much MPB offered compared to what I paid, mine doesn't squeak. So, Si might be right in that you may be disappointed in what you will be offered for your 500/5.6PF, I think there is an abundance of them for sale now and when you bought it you would have had to wait because of the demand... (I went down the 200-500 route). But the 500/4 lens is slowly paying for itself when you factor in how much I would need to pay in rental.

How much. Did mpb offer you for your 500/f4. Just curious as i am looking for one

The 600mm PF is sharper than the 500mm PF even without a TC added to it. The TC will make the difference even a little more obvious. Still, it's an expensive proposition for not a lot of gain.

The bigger difference IMO is the lens function buttons that are compatible with the Z bodies. Focus recall can make a big difference when the lens/camera locks onto something in the BG and doesn't want to focus close(r).

Between those 2 lenses there is quite a price difference so bear that in mind. The Z600 is a sharper lens, I’ve owned 2 500mm PF’s after regretting selling the first but I’d throw in another lens which is much bigger but better than both and that’s the 500mm f4E FL. I own one of these after almost pulling the pin on the Z180-600 zoom but I came across a superb condition FL lens for a couple of hundred pounds more and to me it was a no brainer. I love my FL on the Z8, it’s reasonably light, very very sharp and much faster focusing than either of the PF lenses. If you can find a good one cheap enough give it some thought.

Thats a bit low , do you use it on a z8 , how does it perform
Will find out next week in Poland - was hoping to try it out this week but::
a) Wednesday discovered I had a depleted battery.
b) Yesterday, got to the same place as on Wednesday but the kites weren't cooperating
c) Rain stopped play.

I've worked out that as soon as I get back from Poland I'll have save myself a huge amount of rental fees, and the bother of collecting it and returning it to Wex. And it is all mine!

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies folks - I've ended up ordering the Z 600 f6.3 and have put my 500mm PF on ebay, along with the FTZ II and TC14 III
I've ordered from Panamoz again as it's vastly cheaper on there compared to UK prices.
Although I was more than happy with the 500mm PF, the teleconverter and adapter add a fair bit of length if I keep the lens attached in my bag.

My decision was also aided by winning £25k last week  :$

Yeah great lenses, but it's just the size that put me off. I'm usually walking miles and already got enough weight/bulk with me (and I'm not getting any younger). There's some baragins on F-mount lenses - I sold my 200-400 f4 for around £1500 I think - I'd paid £3500 2nd hand, and new they were still around £7500 :(

Dreamcar Giveaways  There's actually 14 Shetland locals that have won cars/cash
Bloody hell. I do those and all I've won is Bonus points! And 14 locals in Shetland winning sounds a bit dodgy.........

There's one chap here that's won 3 cars. It's the first time I've won anything The Ferrari/BMW or £290k draw was the same night - you can see where my heart rate increased when they phoned

Superb. But, I do wish I got the 400/2.8, sometimes I feel 500mm is too long and when on the D500 unless the bird is far away or small the focal length is too limiting.

I loved the 400 2.8 on the D500 ! TBH I loved it on all bodies including Z7II and Z9, wished I still had it !

Really glad you won and I bet your heart was pounding. But the same guy winning 3 cars???? Really???? Doesn't it strike you as odd? Oh and if I'd won the £25k it would 100% be going on the Z 400mm f/2.8 or at the very least the PF 600. Once in a lifetime win - unless your the guy from the Shetland Islands :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

600 PF arrived and I'm very pleased with it :) I was worried I'd not see much difference over the 500 PF, but that extra 100mm is quite noticeable, and it's a fraction lighter but feels better balanced likely due not having to use an adapter and putting the weight further forward. AF seems quicker too

@Hadge A mate from work just won a £1300 coffee machine on Dreamcar Giveaways

It never sounds much but in reality it’s 20% closer/more magnification, if I didn’t have my 800PF I’d be getting a 600

I had thoughts of getting the 600 to go with my 400f4.5 on the Z9 however i have decided just to get the Z1.4tc instead. I have a 200-500 on my D5 and its fine enough for what i need. I can always get the 600 if i feel im not using the 400 and tc.. I want to keep weight down. I have a 600f4 but its a brick and it never gets an outing now.
