Has anyone had experience of either of the below? Cant seem to find info on these specific lenses. Looking at picking them up 2nd hand for sports (mainly rugby) from Grays Of Westminster

500mm f/4D AF-S IF-ED Nikkor

500mm f/4D AF-S IF-ED Nikkor II (lightweight)

I currently use the 70-200 but that struggles when I get close to the half way so want something longer. I have been trying to find the spec out for them but as you are probably aware put in nikon 500mm f4 in google you get a load of answers

Well they are a great lens perhaps not quite as sharp as the 600 not sure or at least I think the 600 is a tad sharper with a teleconverter on if you need one. I use mine for wildlife but I would have thought for a dynamic game like rugby you risk losing shots that are too close, unless you are using 2 cameras?
Just a thought.

The plan I was thinking 70-200 on one for half way line and closer and the 500mm for halfway line and beyond. Just been taking a look at 2nd hand longer lenses and they were the two that came up and were of reasonable price

Interesting. Never heard of them
A good supplier, I've used them as have many others and found them to be good ... return if you don't like it and some warranty.

I just bought a 500 f4 ED II (the lightweight one) from ffordes and they were very good and came exactly as described. I'd recommend them.

I have the 600mm F4VR, previously had the 500mm F4VR. I've been generally pleased with both lenses even with teleconvertors (1.4 & 1.7) except at distances near infinity or further. I have read many times this is an issue with Nikon long lenses that is not an issue with the Canon equivelants. I guess I've got one problem similar to yours (extreme distances), and another situation that I don't find problematic (teleconvertors).

That's the mutt's nutt's, I want one. What length would a Nikkor 1.4TC turn it into...?

On your D810 as it's full frame just multiply the focal length x converter. 500mm x 1.4 =700mm...........If you had a DX body like the D7200 you would also add in the crop factor of that. So 500mm x 1.4 x 1.5 =1050mm

I'm guessing shooting with a 500mm f4, there's no real requirement for the VR version as it would probably be tripod bound about 90% of the time.....(?)

I had the 500mm af-s IF ED for a few years. Pretty unwieldy but once fixed to a decent monopod it was OK, Very sharp, fast focussing on my D3s and excellent for rugby including under floodlights (with a 70-200mm over my shoulder). Only sold it because I wasn't using it enough for paid work.

I'm guessing youse birders/sports long lens shooters don't own many other smaller lenses such as wide angles or standard glass..? No need.....?

Seriously considering the canon version of 500 or 600 f4. Lens-wise have been working my way up16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 :) thoughts on buying one of these second hand?

ive had the 300mm 2.8,the 400mm 2.8 and just sold a 500mm F4 VR and i think you would be better served with the 400mm

AFS II non VR are very, very good.the VR are around the same price as the 500
