Hello all,

I am after a bit of advice, I have a nikon 50mm 1.8 which I use with my D80, I take loads of indoor shots of family, etc but I find on my crop sensor it's just a little bit too far in terms of length, sometimes struggling to fit the subject in the shot. I was thinking of buying a 35mm 1.8 to help get around this issue and I was wondering what peoples opinions on this move would be.

Cheers

People's opinions differ of course, but I much preferred the 35mm to 50mm on crop. The 35mm 1.8G is also a much better lens (sharper wide open, better build, better handling/mf, included hood) than the 50mm 1.8D.

I have both. Since buying the 35mm, I've barely used the 50mm. I find the 35mm much more flexible for normal use.

For me, I prefer 35 or 85 for candids. The 35 is good for group shots, slightly more full body, portrait orientation, or if you are close and want a head shot. The 85+ range is more for 'sneaky' headshots without being noticed. The 50 is in that middle ground for me that isn't as useful for casual situations.

That said, for £100 I would certainly keep the 50 and also get the 35 for another £175 or less. If only there was an 85 /1.8 in that price range too.

Thanks,
Rick

35/1.8 without a doubt - along with the 18-70 nikon zoom must be the best £150 you can spend on nikon cameras.

If you get bored of it it will also be far easier to sell as it is compatable will all nikons unlike the non motorised 50mm.

I am new to photography and have the 35mm f/1.8 and am very happy with the lens.

I had the 50 and found it a bit too much on the crop as said I have just bought the 35 and its much better

The 35mm is very close to a 50mm on full frame, that's why it is a much better choice on a cropped sensor.

Thanks for all the replies guys, looks like ill be making a 35mm purchase shortly then :) and then who knows....perhaps an 85 as well :)

Clarke.

I've got a 35mm f1.8 & 50mm f1.4G. The 35mm is much more useful and generally sharper than the 50mm. Having said that I wouldn't give up the 50mm as I've got some great dreamy shots with it. Sharpness isn't everything.

If I had to keep one it would be the 35mm.

I have both lenses and find them great. I initially bought the 50 1.8d for shooting the kids but as mentioned above it's a bit tight indoors on a crop sensor. It is perfect though for when I go fishing and want to do a self take so it is my official fishing lens. I bought the 35 1.8 at Christmas and it is perfect for chasing after the bin lids indoors.

Not noticed that much of a difference in IQ with either lens, both are nice and sharp if you close them down a tad.

Sometimes when I shoot indoor pics, using my 50mm on a full frame body is also abit tight. I prefer my wide angle lens more. Getting a full body shot is kinda hard. But if u r talking about headshots or halfbody shots, the 35mm can serve u well. But that's just my opinion.
