I'll tell you the truth, this little beauty is the only reason I'm not switching back to Canon. It truly is a wonderful piece of glass for any money, let alone the pittance asked for it.

Would you have the 1.8 over the 1.4. Is the extra worth it

I'm tempted but don't want to rush into anything.

Having spent the bulk of the current savings on the D7000 and a few photography related accessories I only have about £700 in the lens fund at the moment.

My thoughts are:

Something ultra-wide (No idea what)
Nikkor 17-55
Nikkor 70-300 (tempted by the 70-200 but this seems amazingly sharp for the money)
Nikkor 35 f1.8G or Sigma 50 f1.4
Nikkor 85mm f1.4D (This would be lovely for outdoor portraits but I suspect an awkward FOV on the whole so can be removed from my list)

This would cover almost everything

Depends on your shooting really. If you find yourself constantly at f/1.8 (having a quick scroll through your metadata helps to see the trends) and having to compensate with higher ISO and slower shutter speed settings, then getting that slightly faster aperture might be handy to give you a bit more room. The 35mm f/1.4 AF-S is more of a premium FX lens though, with a very premium price...

I love my 35mm 1.8  Purchased it when I got my D300s and together I simply love the combination. Couldn't recommend it enough to anyone.

One thing to consider is that it can be a bit long for some situations (eg indoors), people say you can zoom out with your feet, but this isn't always possible. For this reason I'm mulling over getting a mid-range zoom (eg tamron 17-50). Would probably still keep the 35mm though.

I like primes and would always choose them over any zoom as IQ is king for me. Would I take this over the 1.4? Not a chance, but only if I had limitless cash to spend. f/1.8 is enough for me at this focal length.

I love my 35mm 1.8, great for the price. Hardly ever off my camera.

Sold all my Nikon kit to go to Kentax. Kept my D40 and the 35mm 1.8 ... It has given the camera a new leash of life, fast accurate AF and excellent images!

If I want a tiny package to carry about without worrying too much about carrying a grand or two worth of equipment while being capable for most stuff I normally photograph this is the one that I bring with me! Looooove it!

I had a quick check on the bay and noticed there wasn't much in the price. Then checked again to see the AF version was £1100 more:eek:

I bought a 50mm and found it to be a little long for what i was shooting at the weekend. So may pick up a 35mm (seems a steal at those prices)

Tokina 11-16 or samyang 8mm fisheye? perhaps... Or Sigma 10-20 f4 (? or which ever the older version was)

Did you meant the sigma 30mm f1.4? or the 50mm?

The23rdMan:
Sorry probably a stupid question but : 35mm f1.8 the 170ukp one from jessops isnt the f1.8g you've posted about here is it? I'm guessing that the G lens is a bit more costly? Just gonna browse for it now but thought I'd ask anyway :D

Edit:
Ok so it is the 170ukp one... my, my, my... :)

Yep, stupid price for a wonder optic.

iv been looking at these for ages and im definitely getting one for my baby d3000, Iv also just purchased a 50mm 1.8 manual focus lens and a Nikon EM for £40 including p+p, bargain? I thought so :)

Dean, thanks a lot. The kids are mad at me now for walking them 3 miles into town to pickup the Nikkor AF-S 35mm f1.8G. I told them it was your fault but they won't listen

Haha! Happy to take the blame if it means you get to use one!

I love mine! It's hardly been off the camera in the 9 months I've owned it!

I got to use mine again at the weekend! Forgot how nice this lens is!! :D

I've got one of those KenR-approved 'miracle' 18-200 lenses, bit I still take the 35 with me as well as I can't bear to leave it at home.

I'm think of getting one of these for xmas... can't decided between this and the 50mm.

I wish I had bought the Nikkor 35 f1.8G over the 50mm f1.8G as my walkabout/low light lens. I went for the 50mm 1.8 and although its a fine lens I just cant seem to get on with it.

Anyone wanna swap? :D

might be worth looking around a bit, i got mine new off the internet (amazon i think) for about 135 and if u go second hand you can probably get one even cheaper!

(sorry to double post btw)

Jack

Price has gone up a bit now.

This thread has become very llama-centric.

Try Jessop, gone down to £164.95 + use Quidco and get an extra 3% off, picking mine up later :)

Jacobs digital have it for £164.95 but anyone who purchased a D7000 recently will have gotten vouchers from Nikon (can be printed from their website) which gives £10 off this lens. For £154.95 I'm a very happy man!

How and where do you get the voucher?

Hi Peter, you should have been sent a welcome pack from Nikon UK when you registered your D7000 for the 2 Year Warranty. I got a link as part of that email to a set of online vouchers I could print and use in store.

The only caveat is that the voucher can only be redeemed at the same shop you made your D7000 purchase.

If you didn't get one it might be worth contacting Nikon UK through their support website and asking why.

Yep, didnt get one, although would only save £2 if I used a voucher anyway through the site I purchased my D7000 so not worth it.

Thanks for the reply

That's what I paid. Price seems to fluctuate somewhat.

Just web chatted with nikon uk and they say they offer no vouchers directly from nikon but have to come from the shop you bought the camera at???

I was going to wait until my girlfriend bought me this lens for my birthday.

Now ive read this thread and I dont think I can wait that long.

She'll just have to buy me something else

just out of interest dean, how much better than the canon f/2 equivalent is it?

It's not one i've used myself as I have the 35mm 1.4 L but I heard it has good reviews

It's night and day better. Joe, you know how difficult I am to please, well, this lens punches so far above its weight it's scary.

Here. Wide open, iso 640, only adjustment WB and slight clarity boost.

looks good, i'm really unfamiliar with the canon 35 f2 though so hard to compare.

I did used to have a sigma 35 1.4 which was bloody awesome for it's price, but it's ef-s only.

Don't know what to tell you. I recieved a link to printable versions from Nikon UK in my welcome email. I printed the voucher and used it at the same store I bought my camera body.

The email was from: offers@nikonplus.co.uk
