Nikon 35mm 1.8 G

Hi,

I currently have a Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens which I absolutely love for taking portrait photos which I use on my Nikon D7100.

Sometimes when I am taking photos inside I find I struggle at times with the 50mm lens. I just feel I don't have the space to get far enough away to get the composition I want.

My question is, would the Nikon 35mm 1.8 G lens make a big difference and is it a good lens for taking portrait photos?

I also saw a post recommending the Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens but that's double the price and does seem to have a few questionable reviews at times.

I'm a bit worried about it being a bit of a wider lens and making folk look a bit weird, but I do have a 18-55mm kit lens which I could play around with at 35mm I guess.
 
I use the 35 quite a lot for my portraits. I like the lens alot and it's very sharp indeed. They're a great buy and go for around £90-100 second hand.

Make sure you don't get too close to the subject though as you will start to introduce some distortion to their faces.
 
i can't say that I've noticed any distortion when I used mine - it is lovely and sharp ( and for sale here :D )

35mm on a crop camera is not very wide at all. Like you said try 35mm with your kit lens but a 35 on a crop works quite well indoors for portraits.

I can get away with 85mm in the house, but i like my 35mm as it's just really easy to use. I'm not cramped up against a wall and i can get my subject away from the background. I like to use my 17-55 f2.8g aswell, but the 35 is tiny in comparison so is often my lens of choice. As long as you're not right up close to your subject it's fine for distortion, but worth keeping an eye on.

I have also been contemplating the Sigma 30mm f1.4 art lens, but at the price it is i don't think i can REALLY justify it, especially when you compare the IQ and price with the Nikon 35.

Decided to go for it with the Nikon 35mm and picked it up last weekend. Was in Currys and they only had the display model but they offered me a 10% discount on it so just went for it.

Not had much of a play with it yet. Used it yesterday for a quick shot which I may use for this weeks 52 and took some photos in the house of my son.

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was when focusing.
