Nikon 300mm F4

DX mode is exactly the same as cropping in post, it sort of gets you closer but at the expense of throwing away half your pixels, the TC will get you just as close but you keep all your 36mp, no brainer really mate.

Cheers, I thought just as much.

There's a guy selling an old 300mm 2.8 + 1.4 TC on a local site, but he won't budge on splitting them, bah! - He's asking €2000 for the combo' - I'd give him €250 for the TC and he'd sell the lens easier without it. But he's stubborn.

Amazon don't seem to have the 1.4x in stock atm. Where should I look for good prices and reliability?

Mine arrived on Friday morning very nice piece of gear, now for a tripod to go with it.

Get yourself the Kenko Teleplus pro 3000 DG, personally wouldnt go for the newer DGX version as it seems a tad softer, £75 used is a good price mate.

Had a good scout about for one, they're either almost as dear as a Nikon, or all for canon. There is one for £122 on a sale site. Worth that?

I think it's new at least, doesn't actually say: But just noticed the seller is Onestop digital, so that's HK right? It's about £180 for Nikon on amazon uk :/

Can't find any about used. I'm starting to think on that 1.7x that's for sale locally. I had that TC before, for the 70-200, but thought it was degrading the end image quality a tad.

Just ordered a 1.4x TC II on ebay ... it was honestly the only one I could find. £295.

Ach, sure it's always the way, there will always be cheaper soon as you buy something :) I don't mind once the one I get works fine. I had contacted Gray's about one they had listed for £145 [older version] , but they responded to say they don't actually have it anymore ... I wish these places would update their used lists more often, that's happened me a fair few times on UK sites.

I'm not advocating DX instead of longer FL, they are different things. But in DX mode w/ grip and the right battery(ies) you get 6fps instead of 4, and it can make a difference (5 w/o grip). If it's just cropping off pixels I'll have to remove later, why not? Files are smaller, more fit on a card, they record/transfer quicker, etc etc.

I would have taken it, but I've already paid for the one on ebay yesterday.
