I've used the Nikon 300 2.8 VR (don't use the VR for my shooting) and the Sigma 120-300, the Nikon is in a different league, especially in poor light, and stopped down to 2.8
Nothing wrong with the Sigma, but to get the best out of it it, I found it likes good light.
I don't think the VR would be an issue as I'd be using either on a monopod. I'd be using it for the bike racing at Knockhill, where "bad light" is what we call summer.....
