Hi all, managed to pick up a Nikon 300mm f5.6 for my Nikon D7100 ... I've played around with my auto focus lenses without a hitch, but I cannot take a pic through the 300mm .. it is used so I have the chance to send it back ... but all I get is black screen .. any suggestions ? and no even though I am a complete novice .. I don't have the lens cover on :)

If its an older manual focus lens you need to set the camera to "shoot without lens"

oh ... ok ... will look that one up ... be back in a bit .. thanks for the help

can't seem to find anything along those lines in the settings or manual .. apart from manual/auto lens control ??

What is the aperture set at on the lens?

hmm I've found a setting called "non chipped lens settings" I've set in 300mm and f range. It's made no difference.

You say, you can't take a photo and you say, you get a black screen??

Do you get a green dot confirmation of focus achieved? Maybe shutter is in "focus priority", so try change it to "release priority"...

I've also found that there is no change in aperture reading on the camera display when changing from 5.6 to 32 .. or is that because of the manual lens?

A couple of things to try ... first set the aperture ring on the lens to it's minimum, i.e. the biggest number it will be something like 22 or 32. Try that, if it doesn't work you may have to enter the non cpu lens data into the camera - you'll find the menu option on the setup menu.

ok aperture set 32/22 then 16 then 5.6 ... nope same result. Picture is black. Set non chipped lens settings 300mm focal length and f22-5.6 .. nope still the same. This was in fully manual mode.

the camera takes a photo but it is completely black ..
Could be a stuck aperture?

Can you move the lever on the bottom of the lens and see, if the aperture blades are opening/closing?

Re. not showing aperture value in viewfinder, then you'll have to fill-out the Non-CPU lens data in your camera. Specify both lens focal length and maximum aperture here...

Before mounting lens, also ensure you've set lens to max. aperture, 32.

ok I did the release priority. No change .. I've looked down the lens and yes the aperture is moving freely from one stop to the next .. ahhh now I didn't set it to 32 prior to fitting .... I will try that now .. stay tuned ..

While I'm holding my breath :D what exact lens (name, model) is it??

ok back again .. it's a Nikon 300mm ED F/5.6 non vr or af ...
Now I'm getting a f readout on the camera display now. But at 5.6 it's showing f22 .. I wonder if I need to have the aperture set to 5.6 instead of 32 .. but even so no pic .. just black ..

ok that sorted out the "F" display .. now it's accurate. I had to fit the lens with it at 5.6 .. still no pic though ??

oh what the hell have I been writing !!!!! old age MUST be setting in ... it's the Nikon 600mm F5.6 ED ....

sorry :cuckoo:

Ahhh! Now we're talking! The beast! :D

Btw. sorry for the confusion re. the aperture min/max. Got that reversed... haven't been using AI lenses for +30 years

And btw. it shouldn't be necessary to set the lens at anything before mounting it. Only mentioned it to rule out a possible error here.

I've heard stories of a malfunctioning AI-follower on the camera, check if it rotates freely.
See first photo here, for where it is positioned https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com...ween-nikon-manual-lenses-types-(ai,-ai-s-etc)

It may be stuck or bent...

Can't you test the lens on another camera. There really isn't anything, that can go wrong with that kind of "low-tech" gear (said in a loving sense!)?

And the stupidest question of all... but you can look through the lens? Both on and off camera?

I can see clearly through the lens so that isn't the problem. I can't see a problem with the lens ring on either the camera or the lens ... this is ridiculous ..

Test on other cam?

If aperture blades are running smooth 100% of all time, and the above didn't solve anything, then I'm affraid, I'm running low on ideas.

If I were you with such a great lens, I would sign up on NikonCafe, enter the "Lens lust" section and ask the oracles over there. They know everything! :D

Would very much like to hear the outcome of this mystery!

The only thing i can think of is the mirror is not going up,is their a mirror lockup feature on the D7100 if so try an exposure with the mirror in the lock up position, and see if it still come out black :)

PS i know photographer who have used it on the D7000 ok

from what I have read if the mirror is up then I will not be able to see anything through the viewfinder. I can see through it at the moment with the lens attached so I don't think that is the problem. I could be wrong though .. Live view I have tried with the same results (black pic no image) ..

Just a reminder that the view I get through the viewfinder is clear and I can focus just fine ...

Looking through viewfinder, what happens, when you press the pre-view button?

If you shoot a bit of video, how does it looks like?

And finally, EXIF data, please!?

haven't had a chance to get it out to play with it today. Will get the info asap ... the wife has me doing work around the house !!:bonk:

ok I had a chap on the Nikon cafe just message to say that the 600mm f5.6 cannot be used on the D7100 ... anybody heard of this !!!

Weird. I have used old Ai and Ais lenses on D200/300/700 and 800.

Unless the D7100 has something odd about it, then it seems strange that you cannot use it at all.

I can`t help you i`m afraid, hope you find your answer though.

Take a pic of the lens, the mount and the aperture ring,so people can see exactly what you have.
