Yes
I bought one of these lens last year from flea bay and i am quite happy with it apart from it doesn't lock into the camera properly there is a little bit of play if it moves to the right I get an error message. What is causing this as it is annoying

A worn bayonet mount. If you give it a wiggle does the contact line up again and everything work fine?

If so, get it repaired because it is a fine lens.

Yip a wee wiggle and it's fine.how much to fix the mount?

Hi,

I have one of these, and a mighty fine lens it is too. Mine is slightly loose in the mount as well, and the lens it'self is like new, with no sign of wear on the bayonets. It doesn't have any problems making the contacts however.

When I had problems with my old AIS lenses on my F3 and F5, I used to face the outer surfaces of the bayonet with insulating tape. This tightened up the mount nicely.

Ah, ok...not the same issue then. If it's fEE then that could be due to the lens not being locked at it's smallest aperture when used on a digital body. I know the 80-200s tend to be slightly loose on their mounts (which causes the "f6" error I mentioned previously) but from what I can gather this is a "quirk" of the lens rather than a fault. If your 300mm is locked at it's smallest aperture, then it sounds as if there could be a fault, but it would be worth trying Nikon's online technical help to see if there is any mention of a similar problem.

Also, try cleaning the contacts with lighter fluid - or acetone. BUT DO NOT GET ANY ON THE GLASS. A cotton bud is all it needs, put some lighter fluid or surgical spirit on a cotton bud and clean the contacts with it.

You could also try Lehman's for repairs - cheaper than Nikon. Fixation are good but also expensive (more than Nikon!)

Wait a minute...

There's a pin that locks the lens into position, although there may be some play in the bayonet mount, there should be very little rotation.
Does the pin click into the slot ?, if it does maybe the slot is worn so large it allows enough rotation to show an error.
If not, maybe there's something in the slot blocking the pin.
Can't imagine there's much wrong with a recent D80 mount/pin.

Is this a D80? They have lens mount issues with quite a few lenses (18-135, 70-300 Vr etc), do you have a different body you can try it on?

According to his camera bag, yes it is.

Yip it's a d80 funny thing my 18-70 has a little play but it does not cause errors I never thought it could be the camera I'll have a look at that when I get home thanks

I have just been given a D1x:) and it's absolutely fine on that
