Until very recently I had one of these beauties. I loved it. Pin sharp but not hugely quick to focus although very accurate. I used it mainly for motorsport and occasional wildlife. I didnt ever try it with the 1.4x, but sure it'll be a great combo.
I've just got that exact combination, albeit with the Kenko Pro 300 1.4TC. Focus is a bit on the slow side, but the IQ is superb, even with the TC on. You'll need to practice your hand holding technique though, or use a monopod. This was taken Sunday with the TC at 1/200th sec, f/6.3, ISO200.
I have the latter and its great - nothing to say bad about it really. Its a 300mm f4 lens and it has the silent wave focus motor. Works lovely for motorsport and takes either the 1.4x or 1.7x TC's like a charm (with the obvious usual caveats of TC use) on my D300.
Not as good as the Nikkor 300 2.8, but still good enough for most.
I bought one from a member on here recently (300mm f/4 ED AF-D) and used it properly for the first time yesterday. Its very slightly soft at f/4 but at f/4.5 its fine and from there onwards just gets sharper.
While the auto focus isn't the quickest, setting the focus limiter speeds things up nicely and shooting a rally it seems to keep up fine tracking cars coming towards me, probably about 80-90%% of the shots were in focus.
For the money (I piad £330) I think its good value for money compared to the AF-S version which are going for £700 - £800 second hand!
If I remember I'll put some sample shots with it up later, got to sort out the other shots first.
I use the Nikon 300mm AF-S for a lot of my hide work.Regularly couple it up with Nikon's 1.4conv.
They can squeak! Mine did then stripped the gears inside the lens. Had it rebuilt about a year ago & it is as good as ever.
Very sharp lens.
