Nikon 2nd camera

Bit of advice needed please.

I've a bit of spare cash (400-500 quid) to blow on camera gear. I've a D700 for my full frame needs but fancy getting a crop body to leave on my Sigma 150-500. Will be used for aircraft and, very occasionally, birds. What would people suggest and why? Secondhand is fine, maybe a D90, D300?

D300 all the way. They are available now for around £500 or even a little less if you are patient and find the right one on eBay.
Brilliant camera and now even better value used.

The best thing about the D700/D300 combination is that the controls and menus are almost identical.
