I am agonizing between these 2 lenses - they are similar in price. Which is the better buy and why?:bang::bonk:

Depends which is more important, the width or the speed.

IMHO the Nikkor 35/2 is the only truly excellent prime Nikon makes from 20mm up to 35mm, at least with auto focus.

Having said that, if you want a 28mm I would advise picking up a manual focus 28mm AI-S which blows the doors off any of the aforementioned primes including the 35/2.

The 28mm is a nice lens though, and useful if you want to mess around with reversing rings. Personally I prefer the 35/2 over any of the 28mm AF's - but the 28mm f/2.8 AI-S is in a different league to any of the other auto focus "wide" (20mm to 35mm) primes.

sorry guys - I made a real balls up about that. i meant to say the nikon 35mm f2 versus the SIGMA 30mm f1.4. Apologies:bonk:

Simple.

For DX the Sigma 30mm murders the 35/2 - end of discussion :)

(although this comes on a weekly basic everywhere - and usually is about 50-50 in favour of either)
