Simply....

How good is this lens.. Is it better than the Nikon 50mm f1.8 AFD  - I've had the latter (50mm) in the past but would like to know what the 28mm is like... Its for a Nikon D300s... Have tried to look at pixelpeep for some pic's but would like to hear some peeps comments..

Cheers

Probably Nikon's worst ever prime. 'Nuff said.

Get the 28mm f/2.8 AI-S, it'll smoke it.

 Andy....

 Doesn't that mean that I'll have to manually focus with it though (too used to AF'in :$)

Yes - manual focus is good for the soul :)

Actually its very easy with a wide angle, and AI-S lenses are designed with MF in mind.

When I went completely Sony for a bit the only three lenses I kept were - Nikon 18-70 DX, Nikon 28mm f/2.8 AI-S and Nikon 55mm f/2.8 AI-S as I felt the two AI-S lenses were irreplaceable.

24mm f2.8 AFD or 35mm f2 AFD would be better options if you want AF, just decide which side of 28mm you want to be.

 the cheaper side

Thing is.... I already have Nikon's 28-70 2.8 (aka the "beast") & have owned a couple of nifty-fifties in the past... I was looking at getting something less than 50mm (due to the d300s sensor) so I've seen a few of these 28mm flying around- either that or the Nikon 35mm AFD.... Just to save me lugging the "beast" about really...

What a load of tosh. One of my nicer lens'. Its sharper than the 17-55 DX I had.

Here's a couple real world samples for you.

I borrowed a 28mm and it's not a touch on the 17-55 I own. I mean seriously, there's leagues of difference.

This would be an interesting issue to resolve, because 28mm on a crop = 42mm equivalent which is IMHO a very useful focal length, can look a little wide or a little long depending on what you do with it. The 35mms (AF-D f2 or AF-S f1.8) are a little long. Is there any way of resolving this issue? Any images to back up those for and against the 28mm?

I've tried pixelpeep but that was for the 28mm on a d300s which didn't show any pic's....

If you own a D300 - the best autofocusing 'wide standard' prime for the money, hands down, is the 35mm f/1.8 DX. No need to worry about whether you might eventually go full frame - it's cheap enough to use now, and well-regarded enough to hold its value.

The 35 f2 is the better of the two, and will AF on the D300 no problem.

Whilst that's a great lens, it's by no means "wide"! It's actually a bit long for a normal, with an effective focal length of 52.5mm. Hence my interest in the quality of the 28mm, which is more of a true normal length.

The 35 f2 is the better of the two [35 AFD and AFS], ...

the 28mm f2.8 is probably the worst prime any camera makers has made ...

I tried to resist... :D

We need to be careful of versions, as the design of these lenses has changed over the years and the AFD variants are often regarded as some of the weakest.

It also depends what you're using them for, for example, many regard the new AFS 35/1.8 DX better than the AFD (on DX) -- one case in point: http://bythom.com/Nikkor-35mm-D-lensreview.htm, http://bythom.com/Nikkor-35mm-DX-AFS-lensreview.htm. (I have the older 35s, not the AFS.)

I have the older 28s and not the AFD, but despite having lenses regarded as (far) better I could see reasons to try one despite its reported flaws. Reviews and practice aren't always the same.

I agree if OP is adamant he wants the 28mm he needs to try one for himself, I have seen glowing reviews for this lens, and I have also seen it described as rubbish.

Personally I would go for the 24mm f2.8, but probably that is beacause I already have the 35mm f2 and would want that extra width the 24mm would offer.
