Gone to use my Nikon 28-70 f2.8 this morning and it's not auto-focussing at all. All I can hear is a whirring noise from the lens. I've tried it on a D200 and a D50 and the result is the same, whereas all other lenses I've got focus as they should.

Can anyone diagnose the problem from this description at all?

Happy to give more information as required.

Possibly the focus motor gone faulty. May want to send it for repair or send it to nikon to check it out.

That's what I was thinking it might be, just looking for confirmation I guess.

Gutted though as I've only had the lens since Monday, but bought 2nd hand so guess I've learnt a lesson.

Second hand from a shop or private? If is second hand you can take it back. If is private, you can try contact the seller to see what option you can have ..... but chance is slim ...

Private sale off ebay.

Guess its one of those things that can go at any time.

If can't get refund i would suggest you invest some money to get it repair which is better then sitting at home doing nothing. Is a cracking lens to use when operate perfectly. I liked my all the time.

Spoken with the seller and it was working perfectly when it left them and they've never had any problems with it so I guess it decided to go wrong when I took delivery of it.

So, it's off to a repairers to get it fixed.

Can anyone recommend a good repair facility that can turn a lens round quickly as I'd really like to have this back up and running by next weekend to take on holiday with me.

Also worth contacting Nikon in Kingston.

Thanks Beardy and Trevorbray, I'll give them a shout tomorrow and see what they can do.

Adrian - that's a bummer
It seemed to be OK when we were shooting the other night? How did the shots turn out then?

Hi Brian,

All shots from Wednesday were spot on, as you'd expect with this lens. They're on Flickr if you wanted a look.

I guess that's the way of all things though; they work fine up until something breaks.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts. Mine stopped focusing mid session a while ago. No noise from it though. Once back home cleaned all contacts on lens and body and hey presto started focusing again. Not Had a problem since.

I must confess that I hadn't tried that at all as it did the same thing on two bodies.

I'll give it a go though as anything is worth a try to save a £350 repair bill!!

What do I use for cleaning materials?

Quick update for those interested.

Tried cleaning contacts and made no difference at all so sent off to Fixation for a repair estimate.
They rang me today to say that the silent wave motor has packed up and it's going to cost £420 to fix it all.
To say I am gutted would be a HUGE understatement.

Oh cr4p - sorry to hear that Adrian. And such a beautiful lens. Comfort yourself by knowing that when it's repaired it should give you many years of great service.

Intermediate update

I've been in contact with the seller and she has agreed to pay £140 towards the repair of the lens. To say I am over the moon at this gesture of goodwill is a slight understatement.

So, should you ever buy anything off Angie_1402 on ebay, she really is a very genuine person to deal with and hugely professional.

Happy days.

Now that is big of her - easily possible for her to walk away.
Respect!
