Nikon 28-300VR Lens

Please accept my apologies for putting this thread on twice. I put it in 'Talk Photographty' by mistake before realising it should go in this one.but don't know how to delete it.

Hi advice please.
I'm looking at buying a 28-300VR lens, after searching on the web I found mixed reviews so I'm hoping I can get a better review on here.

Can anyone tell me briefly the good and bad points, the lens is just inside my budget. I read that it is slow on autofocus. At present I have a 20mm prime lens, 18-105VR & 55-200VR, I'm thinking if the lens proves a better option I can sell my 55-200VR & 15-55VR which came with the camera.

28 -300mm Nikkor, I presume.

Very fine piece of kit. Excellent value and one of the best purchases I have made. I use mine mostly on my D700. Never found autofocus at all slow on both of my cameras.

Nice to hear you don't find it slow on autofocus, I didn't think it would bother me changing lenses on my camera but find it can be a bit of a pain changing from 18-105 to 55-200 and missed one or two shots doing so. 28-300 should solve my problem do you find the lens heavy?
 
Judging by your other lenses, you're probably using a DX body. Would you maybe be better looking at the 18-200 so you don't lose the wide end?

I don't find it heavy, but I have always liked "chunky/heavy" cameras therefore kit would need to be very heavy before that would bother me. I read folk on here talking about looking for lighter cameras than they have. All down to personal taste and is why people asking for camera purchase advice usually rightly are told to test the feel of cameras before buying.

I normally carry my camera + 28-300 with the strap worn bandolier fashion and the lens pushed into my left hand travel vest pocket. That way most of the weight is spread over both my shoulders. I just keep enough slack in the camera slack to permit the camera to be raised to eye level without undoing the strap position.
 
I use the 28-300 on my D300 as part of my standard travel kit. It can produce razor sharp images under the right conditions, and generally is a highly useful, utilitarian lens...good at most everything, not stellar at anything. I wouldn't sell it...there's nothing out there that would replace it at a price I can afford. The flaw is that there is a bit of distortion in the low end that can be off-putting with certain subjects.
 
Thanks all for taking the time to reply and give your advice. It puts my mind at rest with some of the concerns I had. For the price it appears to be what I'm looking for.
