A good tool that is!
 
Interested to know what you think of the new version. I'm going to buy one of them in the next few months; I don't need VR but if the new one is optically better then I'll go with that. It will be a purchase that will last me for years so I'll go with the better of the two.
 
Ill have to reserve judgement till ive used it in anger, im unsure of how much sharper it could get as the previous version was my favourite lens and sharp as a pin, but for me the vr is important as it will help me get sharper shots on the 36mp D810, the more i dont have to use a tripod the better for me, it suits the way i shoot.
 
if vr really isnt important id go for the first version as it would be a lot cheaper

Indeed!

I still shoot at times @ 1/15s and I don't yet need
nor have to to get lens with VR. I read a report that
says that optically it is the same lens.

Dave's tip is the better one: get a second hand.
