Yes
Nikons lens is £1000 where as the Sigma lens is £300 ish.

I need a new lens for the D700 and the Sigma lens is not DC I think it is so it should work full frame on the D700.

Can anyone give me any advice on which would be the better choice? I want to avoid spending £1000 if I can but I don't want to buy a heap of junk for £300 either.

I have a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and its a great lens.

Firstly, don't consider the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 as the first option, as they are much better ones :)

Get the Sigma 24-60 which is better than the 24-70, and ironically cheaper.

A better alternative again would be the Tamron 28-75 - I have both lenses. I tend to prefer the Tamron 28-75 as optically they are soooo close (the Nikkor has better bokeh), but the Nikkor really is massive, and with the hood on looks more like Darth Vader than a lens - its NOT discrete.

All I can say is try the alternatives with an open mind - I strongly believe in this, it'll save you a fortune at times :)

I'll probably be stumping up for a 17-70 f/2.8 Siggy soon. For £800 quid less than the Nikkor equivalent I can live without the horror of it not having a designer logo.

Ive got the Sigma 24-70 and i love it, ive found it to be sharp as you like, especially at F8, obviosly F2.8 isnt so sharp but the bokeh you get when using the longer end is very, very nice!

I've got the canon fit version, and can only echo this!!

For what its worth, the Tamron 28-75 *is* very sharp at f/2.8 :)

The Tamron 28-75 murders the Sigma 24-70 optically (and I have used it). I just don't think the 24-70 is a very good lens tbh :(

I like the Sigma 24-60 a lot, and I've got crops somewhere. Its still not as good as the Tamron, but by f/4 is nice and sharp.

Thanks

Will the Tamron be full frame on the D700 then?

Yes.

I got mine for £108 on Ebay, boxed and mint with a UV filter, so I sold the UV filter for a £10 (I don't use UV filters).

For £98 this is just a lovely lenses, and I'd happily pay full whack for one.

another vote for a Sigma 24-60

i love mine, so fast and sharp

have a fair few pics to post later taken with it

uhmmm...there's no contest here is there, surely the issue is price and its worth to you. But of course equipment ain't ever the real issue. Taking pictures with resonance is and a Holga can cope with that.
