Nikon 24-70 2.8

Jeff, can you try it on another body, if it's OK on another body then problem lies with the original body not the lens, if the same then try cleaning the contacts on the lens.

Check youre not in spot metering mode as this is very very sensitive and can cause hunting on something like a thin striped target

When you say left or right, are you still within the 15 cross type sensors or further out?

Yes Graham. just one or two steps either direction. I think I may have solved the problem, with the focus point in the centre the assist light comes on, but not if you move the point away from centre, and as I am trying in relatively low light I'm thinking the light level is the cause of the lens hunting for focus. Will do some more tests tomorrow.

May just be as simple as you are going outwith the cross-type focus points? The central group of 15 are all the sensitive ones, and I tend to only use 9-point for anything fast or when the light is dim and notice a fair difference from using 51-point.
