Hi all,

Yesterday whilst shooting at a beach I had the unfortunate situation where a surging wave managed to hit my camera bag, my 24-120 F4 and 85mm 1.8G were in the bag and unfortunately got wet, amongst other equipment

The 85mm seems unscathed and operates normally, however the 24-120 no longer works in AF mode. half-pressing the shutter does not focus the lens, and when attaching it to the camera you can 3 pulses/clicks which I believe is the motor trying but failing to move.

Everything has been cleaned with isopropyl and I’ve checked the SWM which appears to be quite stiff.

If anyone has replaced their SWM (AF motor) before, can you enlighten me as to whether the motor should turn freely or not?

Any other advice would be fantastic.

Ironically the waterline was around 3ft beneath me with normal waves, underestimated the surge though. Needless to say I am now waterproofing my lowepro!

I feel for you :(

The 24-120/f4 is my go-to walkabout lens and it felt like someone had cut my right hand off when the VR died and it needed to go back to Nikon for repair.

Salt water, I assume? The normal procedure is to place it in a bucket of fresh water and get it to a repair technician ASAP.
