Nikon has just released the new 200-500mm f5.6. Based on the mtf charts/price, what are your thoughts about it? How do you think it will compare with the Sigma 150-600mm Sport?

Thank you!

My thoughts are that you're losing 100mm but gaining 1/3 stop of light at the long end on the Nikon :p

Edit: sorry, it's been one of those days ;)

You could also gain 100 - 200mm (depends how you look at the gains) with the Nikon if you use the 1.4TC, but lose the stops, swings and roundabouts spring to mind. I'm going to wait for the Nikon to come out and see some user reviews before I pull the trigger on my next long lens. Also, with the Nikon arrival, it may push down the prices of the Tamron and Sigma 600mm lenses.

Well yes :p

I hope not, I've only just got my Tamron ;) Maybe this was the reason behind the recent cash back, they have inside knowledge ;)

It'll be difficult to judge anything yet, we will need to wait till September for the first comprehensive reviews to appear.

I would guess AF performance and sharpness at the long end are potential advantages of the Nikon.

Possibly, but lenses tend not to at their best at the extremes, in which case using the Tamron/Sigma 150-600mm at 500mm might actually give sharper results. Time will tell.
