Nikon 200-400mm VRI F4

I use a 200-400 with a D500 (and an D810) it works very very well with a subject distance of less than 10m, beyond 10m the image quality decreases. Up close it is sharper than my 500mm, at distance it is not as good. I tend to use it exclusively for up close nature type photos with and without a 1.4tc, the quality hit caused by the tc is the same as any other lens.

Given the short minimum focus distance I find it a better option up close when compared to a 500mm, but the 500mm is a much better general purpose lens. The ability to zoom out makes it a much better option than any prime when used like this. Personally I am thinking for changing my 200-400 for 200mm f2, but I have been hestitent as I think I will miss it.

I've been using it since 3+ years now and it is a dream lens!
Sharp all through the zooming range and all distances.

I don't use it on a D500 but on a D750. I've had a love hate relationship due to the weight. The VR2 version I have is a very good lens. The zoom is invaluable now, coming from a prime I didn't think I would use it as much as I do. Up close it's fantastic sharp (to be honest I try to shoot more close up as picture quality is always better). Distance wise I find it can be hit and miss but this likely to be because I've read too much into the 'it's not good at distance' and now believe it. It's better with teleconverters than I give it credit. It's soon the deer Rut so this will be my go to lens.
